Tesco Expanding UK Mobile Phone Business
The UK's dominant grocery retailer, tesco is to expand the number of its in-store "phone shops" which promote its own-brand MVNO products. The company is reported to be aiming to have 100 of its phone shops by the middle of next year, up from around 50 at the moment. more

UK Records Second Lowest Market Growth Ever
The UK mobile market saw annual growth drop 0.3pp year on year to 4.4%, the second lowest figure ever recorded. In real terms, annual net additions stood at 3.15m, down slightly on the 3.21m recorded in the prior twelve months. Quarterly net additions totalled 0.97m, taking the total connection base to 74.07m and penetration to 121.5% at the end of Q3. more

UK Q2 '08 Market Update - Hutchison Tops for Quarterly Net Additions
Having seen its first net loss for over two years in Q1, the UK mobile market was back on course in Q2 with a net gain of 0.39m, slightly higher than the 0.38m recorded in Q2 07. The total customer base stood at 71.05m at the end of the quarter. Annual net additions totalled 3.34m, up from 3.23m a year earlier, while on a proportionate basis annual growth stood at 4.9%, just below the 5.0% recorded for the prior twelve month period. more

Ericsson has been selected as sole supplier to supply and operate a complete GSM mobile network for Cable&Wireless as it launches its new Fixed Mobile Convergence (FMC) services in the UK. In his new role, Batchelor will oversee the development and commercial success across all parts of the tesco Telecoms business, which includes tesco Mobile (its mobile network), internet access, internet phone, home phone and sales of landlines, mobile phones and accessories. more

UK 3G Mobile Users Passes 10 Million Mark
In Q1 08, the UK mobile customer base saw its first quarterly decline for two years, shedding 119k customers to finish the quarter on 70.67m. This is equivalent to a penetration rate of 116.0%. The losses were widespread, with O2, T-Mobile, Virgin and tesco all suffering net declines. A similar range of companies also lost customers in Q1 07, but in that quarter a strong performance from Vodafone (723k net additions) ensured that the total customer base grew; in Q1 08, however, the highest figure for net additions was OrangeĆ's 114k. Hutchison gained 75k and Vodafone 41k, but O2 lost 79k, T-Mobile 71k, Virgin 68k and tesco 100k. more
