Bharti Airtel Says On Track to Launch in Sri Lanka by Year End

India's Bharti Airtel says that it expects to launch its network in neighbouring Sri Lanka by the end of this year - subject to sorting out a long running interconnection dispute with the incumbent operators. Bharti Airtel has accused the incumbents of offering it termination rates which are higher than the rates they offer each other.  more

EU Telecoms Reforms - You can keep your "bill and keep" Ms Reding

The EU telecom regulator, Ms Vivienne Reding, wants mobile operators to make further deep cuts in termination rates to reduce "excessive profits" and reduce the cost of mobile ownership for the benefit of consumers. However, she also likes the idea that customers should pay to receive calls - as they do in the under-penetrated markets of North America. While the call for lower termination rates is a well-worn issue, the idea that we should move to a "bill and keep" system is new. Quite how this is "pro-consumer" eludes us.  more

Albania Cuts Mobile Termination Rates

AlbaniaĆ's Minister of Telecommunications, Sokol Olldashi has announced cuts in the mobile termination rates which he said will lower phone rates by around 20 percent. The reduction is based on recommendation from the Telecommunication Regulation Agency (ERT).  more

Regulatory Changes Could Drive 40 Million Europeans to Ditch their Mobile Phone

A report commissioned by Vodafone claims that some 40 million Europeans would ditch their mobile phone if US-style billing comes to the EU where a mobile phone user has to pay to receive phone calls. The submission to the European Commission, seen by the Financial Times is in response to proposals from the European Commissioner for Telecoms, Viviane Reding.  more

Hutchison Whampoa Profits Rise on Lower 3G Loses

Hong Kong conglomerate, Hutchison Whampoa has posted a first half profit which beat the average of analyst estimates on lower loses from its 3G operations and higher port and energy earnings. The company reported that net income dropped 63 percent to HK$10.7 billion ($1.4 billion), after taking out the HK$35.8 billion gain from selling its Indian investment to Vodafone a year earlier.  more

3 UK Aims to Double Subscriber Base by 2012

Hutchison 3G UK is aiming to double its subscriber base to nearly seven million by 2012 the company CEO, Kevin Russell has said. In an interview with the Financial Times, Russell said that his target is to double the size of the business over the next three to four years.  more
