Telus Announces HSPA Upgrade for Alberta
Canada's telus has announced a 2009 capital plan to invest more than CA$700 million (US$570 million) focused primarily on advanced wireless and wireline broadband infrastructure in Alberta. This investment is expected to support more than 2,100 jobs. Since 2000, telus has made more than $18 billion in capital and operating expenditures in the province. more

Telus Warns of Falling ARPU Due to Economic Downturn
Canada's telus has warned that its first quarter wireless segment financial results are expected to be adversely impacted by lower than expected wireless net additions and average revenue per unit (ARPU). Wireless operating results are being impacted by a weak macro-economic environment, reflect the acceleration of a negative trend first observed in the fourth quarter of 2008, and are below telus' expectations. more

Global W-CDMA base doubles as CDMA decline gathers pace
The dominance of the GSM family of technologies continued to increase in the year ended 30th September 2007 as a 25.9% increase in the number of 2G GSM customers was boosted by a 102.1% increase in the W-CDMA base. Overall the increase amounted to 28.8%, exceeding the global total of 24.2% and taking the proportion of the global customer base accounted for by the two technologies to 86.0% from 82.9% a year earlier. more

Rogers Wireless and TELUS Mobility Q3 2007 Results
First and third placed Canadian mobile operators, Rogers Wireless and telus Mobility, both recorded their best net additions of the year so far in Q3 2007, as is traditionally the case in this seasonally-affected market. telus came in very slightly short of what it achieved in the third quarter last year, with 135k net new connections, against 137k 12 months earlier. Rogers did 20% better than it managed last year, with 243k net additions (up from 203k), almost exceeding the recent records set in Q3 2005 and Q4 2006 when it registered 244k new customers. more

Canadian Operator Orders R-UIM Cards
Gemplus International has been selected by Canada's telus Mobility to develop R-UIM cards that will tie together the Canadian wireless carrier's CDMA and iDEN networks and enable world roaming on GSM networks."The ability to tie together CDMA, iDEN and GSM networks to enhance roaming options will give clients increased mobile freedom, enabling them to travel and do business more efficiently," said Robert Blumenthal, telus Mobility's Vice President of Products and Services. "Gemplus' proven track record of providing high-quality smart cards makes it an ideal partner in the development of R-UIM cards."R-UIM smart cards authenticate and identify individual subscribers on wireless networks, enabling them to freely carry their subscription and personal information from phone to phone, and around the world.telus Mobility, which already uses Gemplus SIM cards in its iDEN Mike phones, is researching the benefits of expanding smart cards to its CDMA network. With this move, telus Mobility joins the other 40 CDMA operators using R-UIM, including operators located in China, India, Japan and Brazil."Gemplus is pleased to support telus Mobility as it develops R-UIM technology in Canada and thus the inherent smart card advantages of portability and security. Push to Talk expands in Canada
Canada's telus Mobility has launched a Push to Talk service on their CDMA network, complimenting the iDEN platform that the company already operates under the "Mike" brand name. telus Mobility also today announced the coming extension of Mike phone and PTT coverage from Canada and the United States into Mexico and South America later this quarter. more

Canada's telus Mobility is planning to start offering roaming on GSM networks for customers on its CDMA and iDEN networks. One of the new phones, based on the Motorola i930, will operate on telus Mobility's Mike network, which is based on Motorola's iDEN (integrated digital enhanced network) technology. The other phone, based on the Motorola A840, will operate on the telus Mobility PCS network, which is based on the CDMA standard. more

The Motorola i95cl handset incorporates Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition (J2ME) technology, which allows users to customize their handsets with applications to meet their changing needs. It features a large, 120 x 160-pixel colour display that can show up to 256 colors for Java applications. It contains expanded memory capabilities, enhanced T9 text input and Lightweight Windowing Toolkit (LWT) functionality. more
