Papua New Guinea getting a Mobile WiMAX Network
Alvarion has won a contract to deploy the first Mobile WiMAX network in Papua New Guinea for Telikom PNG. Alvarion’s local partner for this project is Telrad Networks. The operator’s first network in the capital city of Port Moresby was launched this month and is expected to provide connectivity to approximately 1,500 users. The second network to be deployed in the city of Lae is planned to go live in the second quarter of 2009. Further expansion is expected at the end of 2009, extending the network to all regional cities as part of the master plan to achieve nationwide coverage for 55,000 end-users. more

Digicel Gets Favourable Termination Rates in Papua New Guinea
Papua New Guinea's incumbent telecoms operator, Telikom PNG is reported to have been ordered to pay significant termination fees to new entrant, Digicel. The local National newspaper reported that Telikom will pay Digicel nine times more than what Digicel will pay Telikom for use of TelikomÃ's land lines to call mobile phones and vice versa. more

Papua New Guinea monopoly ready for privatization
Papua New Guineas monopoly telecoms company, Telikom PNG has completed preparation for its impeding privatization, according to its Managing Director, Sunil Andradi. Mr. Andradi told a meeting of the Port Moresby Chamber of Commerce and Industry that all the audits have been conducted and the financial statements are up to date. The company has completed 90% of the information memorandum they would be sending to the interested bidders. He did not detail if he expected the privatization to occur before the market is de-regulated at the end of this year, or in the first half of next year. more
