EU calls on mobile operators to continue to improve child safety policies

Half of 10 year-old, 87% of 13 year-old and 95% of 16 year-old children in the EU have a mobile phone, but half of European parents worry mobile phone use might expose their children to sexually and violently explicit images (51%) or bullying by other children (49%), according to a survey. The European Commission has now called on mobile operators to do more to keep children safe while using mobile phones by putting in place all the measures in the voluntary code of conduct, signed by 26 mobile operators in 2007.  more

Sucessful Trials of SIP-I for Voice Calls on GSM Networks

The GSM Association has completed successful trials of voice calls based on the SIP-I protocol between core networks supplied by Ericsson and Nokia Siemens Networks. Hosted by teliasonera in their Finnish and Swedish laboratories, the trials are a significant step towards the use of SIP-I to control the transmission of packet-based voice between mobile networks.  more

GSMA Launches Mobile Alliance Against Child Sexual Abuse

The GSM Association, the global trade association for mobile operators, has launched the Mobile Alliance against Child Sexual Abuse Content to obstruct the use of the mobile environment by individuals or organisations wishing to consume or profit from child sexual abuse content. While the vast majority of child sexual abuse content is today accessed through conventional connections to the Internet, there is a danger that the broadband networks now being rolled out by mobile operators could be misused in the same way.  more

Strong Demand for Laptops With Built-in Wireless Broadband Connectivity

The GSM Association (GSMA), and Microsoft have jointly published the results of the first-ever consumer study into mobile broadband computing that shows that there is a tremendous addressable - but currently untapped - market. The study highlights a 70 million unit opportunity, worth some US$50 billion in 2008, for notebook PCs in the high growth, mass market $500 -$1000 price range with built-in mobile broadband.  more

GSM Association Aims for Global Point of Sale Purchases by Mobile Phone

The worldwide use of mobile phones for payments at point of sale is the aim of a new initiative announced by the GSM Association (GSMA), the global trade organization for mobile operators. The 'Pay-Buy Mobile' initiative is a natural progression for the industry, following the GSMA's program - announced last year - to define a common global approach to enabling Near Field Communications (NFC), the technology used to link mobile devices with payment and contactless systems. more
