High Growth Forecasted for Western European Mobile Communications

A new European market report from Reportlinker notes that the sector has undergone enormous changes in response to regulatory pressure on roaming and interconnection tariffs, competition from numerous new start-up MVNOs, and pressure on voice tariffs and bundled SMS offers which have lowered voice and data ARPU. The company says that revenue growth in coming years will primary depend on the continued increase in subscriber numbers and the use of multiple SIMs, and by the further adoption of rich-media services including music downloads and mobile TV.  more

TeliaSonera Appeals Against Spectrum Removal

TeliaSonera Finland says that it is appealing against the Finnish Communications Regulatory Authority's (FICORA) GSM 900 radio license decision and has requested that the enforcement of the decision should be suspended for the duration of the appeal process. The Finnish Communications Regulatory Authority (FICORA) announced yesterday that it is going to transfer some GSM spectrum from Sonera Mobile to rival operator, Finnet Networks from the end of next year. Sonera Mobile is due to hold onto that spectrum until the end of 2010 according to its current license. more

Mobiles Kill Off The Public Payphone

TeliaSonera Finland has decided to abandon its payphone business. TeliaSonera Finland has a little less than 2000 public telephones of which around two hundred in the region of Auria. Of the payphones over 1200 are indoors and the rest outdoors, for example on the outside walls of office buildings. At the moment Sonera's payphones can still be found in 260 locations. The public phones will be phased out by April 30, 2006. more
