mm02 renegotiates 3G infrastructure contracts
mm02 has completed a six month review of its 3G contracts, and says that it will consolidate all its existing supply contracts and replace them with new strategic partnerships. Nortel Networks and Nokia will become the principal suppliers of its 3G infrastructure. The company is planning to develop a seamless core GPRS network in all mmO2's territories and a common, group-wide network management system. This is expected to lead to economies of scale including a 22% cost saving - estimated at US$530 million over five years - to mmO2 on network expenditure relating to its 2G, 2.5G and 3G networks. mmO2 is now focusing on achieving capital expenditure efficiencies in other areas, including site acquisition, civil engineering as well as other non-equipment spend. more

The new Java-based handheld, named the BlackBerry 5810, integrates the award-winning features of the secure BlackBerry wireless email solution with the convenience of a built-in phone. The BlackBerry 5810 also incorporates Java 2 Micro Edition (J2ME) as its core operating system, providing a secure and open platform for customers, carriers, and developers. more
mmO2 announces job cuts amidst slow subscriber growth
mmO2 today announced a significant restructuring within its UK and Germany operations to help cut its losses. In the UK, BT Cellnet plans to scale back its permanent workforce during the fiscal year 2002/03 by a further 1,400 to 6,100 people following the successful implementation of a reduction of some 250 in the current year. The programme will involve back office, technical and administrative functions across the business, and will also include the closure of 133 of its existing 320 retail outlets. At VIAG Interkom, the company intends to decrease its staff levels in the forthcoming year by an additional 500 to 3,400, following a reduction of 400 during 2001/02. The action, which also includes the closure of a number of retail outlets, will affect a range of functions, including the streamlining of management processes. more

Dutch 3G network sharing agreement
mmO2 (formerly BTWireless) and KPN Mobile have signed an agreement to co-operate on the roll-out of their 3G mobile networks in the Netherlands. The MoU - the first of its kind in the Netherlands - maintains the flexibility to allow other Dutch 3G licence holders to participate in this arrangement. more

BTWireless may be planning job cuts
The UK newspaper, Sunday Business has reported that the soon to be de-merged BTWireless is considering job cuts of up to 10% of the workforce. This would result in cuts of about 1500 staff, and the cuts would occur mainly in Ireland and The Netherlands. BTWireless will be demerged from its parent, BT by the end of the year and will comprise BT's wholly-owned mobile phone subsidiaries in the UK, BTCellnet along with Germany's, Viag, telfort in the Netherlands, Ireland's Esat Digifone and the Isle of Man-based Manx Telecom. BT denied the report saying that some natural wastage may occur, but no final plans have been made." more

Dutch network looks to network sharing to get profitable
The Dutch GSM network, telfort has said that it intends to provide virtual network, MVNO services to reduce its losses. The company chairman, Ton van de Stegge also told the Het Financieele Dagblad newspaper that he is looking for potential 3G network sharing agreements. Speaking on the issue of moving the company into profitability, he added "I have set the goal of achieving profitability by April 1 2002,"" more

Nokia and the UK's BT wireless have successfully completed a 3G All-IP multimedia rich call, using a BT wireless trial All-IP system. The multimedia applications were provided by Nokia experimental All IP Mobility Core system and application servers, run over a trial 3G All-IP network. The system is based on industry-backed standard IPv6 and utilized Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) that forms the heart of future All-IP multimedia and Mobile Internet service architectures. All-IP system enables the delivery of a range of services using a common IP platform providing new capabilities for BT wireless' affiliate networks, such as BT Cellnet, ESAT Digifone, telfort and VIAG Interkom." more

Siemens wins big WAP handset contract
Siemens has been awarded a contract by Dutch mobile operator telfort to supply about 500,000 WAP-enabled mobile telephones. telfort and the Dutch Postbank will provide their customers with the Siemens mobile phones as part of a spring campaign designed to introduce mobile banking to the Dutch market. The Siemens devices from the M35i series will be specially customized to enable Postbank account holders to enjoy mobile banking, and will be issued to half a million Postbank account holders as part of a kick-off campaign for the new service." more

Logica wins worldwide 3G order from BT Wireless
Logica has announced a new contract with the UK 3G license holder, BTCellnet under which the company will use Logica's Odyssey for 3G mobile network planning tool to develop its 3G network. Logica will provide BT with a significant number of Odyssey licences across the UK over the next 12 months. This order is part of a global deal with BT Wireless, where BT Wireless Alliance partners can use Logica's planning tools. Those partners include VIAG in Germany and telfort in the Netherlands, both of whom are existing customers of Logica's 2G radio planning tools." more
