EU calls on mobile operators to continue to improve child safety policies

Half of 10 year-old, 87% of 13 year-old and 95% of 16 year-old children in the EU have a mobile phone, but half of European parents worry mobile phone use might expose their children to sexually and violently explicit images (51%) or bullying by other children (49%), according to a survey. The European Commission has now called on mobile operators to do more to keep children safe while using mobile phones by putting in place all the measures in the voluntary code of conduct, signed by 26 mobile operators in 2007.  more

3G Operator, Hi3G Granted 900Mhz Spectrum in Sweden

The Swedish Post and Telecom Agency (PTS) has made the decision to approve an application from the operators TeliaSonera, Swefour, Tele2, telenor and Hi3G for frequencies in the 900 MHz band. The present licences in the 900 MHz band will be renewed and it will be possible for the operators to phase in new technology for mobile broadband while at the same time continuing to offer GSM mobile telephony.  more

Sweden Proposes Allocating 900Mhz Spectrum to 3G Operator

Sweden's telecoms regulator, the Swedish Post and Telecom Agency (PTS) has decided to distribute a proposed decision concerning the GSM900 band for consultation. The proposal involves the renewal of existing licences in the 900 MHz band, but also that the entire frequency space available in the 900 MHz band should be allocated, which would enable 3G operator, Hi3G to gain access to frequency space in the 900 MHz band. In addition, it would be possible for operators to progress to new technology and supply wireless broadband to a greater extent.  more

Russia's Altimo Expresses Interest in Nigerian Network Operator

Russia's Altimo is reported to be interested in taking a stake in Nigerian operator, M-Tel/NITEL. Altimo's Chief Executive Officer, Mr Alexey Kousmichoff is currently on a visit to Nigeria's Vice-President. Vice President, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, yesterday assured Nigerians of Federal Government's determination to ensure that the interest of Nigerians is protected in the privatisation of M-tel/NITEL.  more

Sweden Finishes "4G" Spectrum Auction

Sweden's telecoms regulator, the PTS has announced that its spectrum auction in the 2.6 GHz band has been concluded, after 16 days of bidding and 112 bidding rounds. Five bidders have won licenses for the total amount of SEK2,099,450,000 (US$348 million).  more

GSMA Launches Mobile Alliance Against Child Sexual Abuse

The GSM Association, the global trade association for mobile operators, has launched the Mobile Alliance against Child Sexual Abuse Content to obstruct the use of the mobile environment by individuals or organisations wishing to consume or profit from child sexual abuse content. While the vast majority of child sexual abuse content is today accessed through conventional connections to the Internet, there is a danger that the broadband networks now being rolled out by mobile operators could be misused in the same way.  more
