Uncertain times ahead as Pakistan's monthly figures continue to disappoint

Vodafone Rebrands its Ghana Subsidiary

Ghana Telecom has been rebranded as Vodafone Ghana and launched a brand new website. After buying a 70 per cent shareholding in the Ghana Telecommunication Company in August 2008, partnering with the Government of Ghana, Vodafone says that it has made significant investments to improve the performance and to expand the capacity of its networks. Vodafone has also signed a multi-million dollar deal with Huawei Technologies to bring its 3G network services to the Ghanaian market.  more

Telenor Launches Mobile Phone Recycling Programme

Norway's telenor has announced that it is introducing a buyback/recycling scheme for mobile phones. According to telenor's calculations at least four million used mobile phones are lying around collecting dust in Norwegian homes. Presently 82 per cent of Norwegian households have at least one mobile phone extra that they are not using. It is only a dismal 12 per cent of consumers that recycle mobile phones. Since mobile phones are not being returned for recycling, mobile phone manufacturers are forced to extract new materials, in stead of just using the resources already available in used mobile phones.  more

Telenor Offers Banking Security via Mobile Phones

Norwegian operator, telenor has announced that BankID for mobile phones is now available. This is an electronic identification and signature solution where the security elements are saved on the SIM card of the mobile phone. This will make banking and payment services available to Norwegians no matter where they are in the world.  more

Telenor Wins Rural Pakistan Coverage Deal

Pakistan's Universal Service Fund (USF) and telenor have entered into a Rs. 930 million (US$11.6 million) contract to provide basic telephony and data services to the population in the yet un-served areas of Sanghar, Tharparkar Umerkot and Mirpur Khas districts.  more

Alfa Held in Contempt by US Court - Telenor's VimpelCom Shares Arrested in Russia

telenor has issued a statement announcing that a US federal court in New York yesterday held four Alfa Group companies in contempt for the second time for their failure to comply with the court's orders confirming the Kyivstar arbitration award. Shortly after the hearing ended, telenor heard rumours that a Russian bailiff acting on behalf of Farimex Product, had arrested all of telenor's shares in Russian mobile operator VimpelCom. This was confirmed this morning.  more

Telenor Moves Grameenphone CEO Over to Hungarian Subsidiary

telenor has shuffled its management, and is moving Mr. Anders Jensen from running its part-owned Bangladeshi subsidiary, Grameenphone to take over at Hungary's Pannon from the beginning of April. He will succeed Mr. Ove Fredheim, who is leaving to take up another posting within the telenor Group in Norway.  more
