EU calls on mobile operators to continue to improve child safety policies
Half of 10 year-old, 87% of 13 year-old and 95% of 16 year-old children in the EU have a mobile phone, but half of European parents worry mobile phone use might expose their children to sexually and violently explicit images (51%) or bullying by other children (49%), according to a survey. The European Commission has now called on mobile operators to do more to keep children safe while using mobile phones by putting in place all the measures in the voluntary code of conduct, signed by 26 mobile operators in 2007. more

Industry to Settle on a Generic Phone Charger for All Mobile Phones
The GSMA and 17 mobile operators and manufacturers have announced that they are committed to implementing a cross-industry standard for a universal charger for new mobile phones. The aim of the initiative, led by the GSMA, is to ensure that the mobile industry adopts a common format for mobile phone charger connections and energy-efficient chargers resulting in an estimated 50 per cent reduction in standby energy consumption and the potential elimination of up to 51,000 tonnes of duplicate chargers. more

Vodafone Expands its Brand into Serbia
Vodafone has extended its Partner Market agreement with mobilkom austria group to Serbia, where Vodafone will introduce a range of Vodafone-branded products and services through mobilkom austria's subsidiary, "Vip mobile". This agreement will make Serbia Vodafone's 41st Partner Market - a network across the world where Vodafone products and services are available through partnerships with mobile operators that Vodafone does not own. more

GSMA Launches Mobile Alliance Against Child Sexual Abuse
The GSM Association, the global trade association for mobile operators, has launched the Mobile Alliance against Child Sexual Abuse Content to obstruct the use of the mobile environment by individuals or organisations wishing to consume or profit from child sexual abuse content. While the vast majority of child sexual abuse content is today accessed through conventional connections to the Internet, there is a danger that the broadband networks now being rolled out by mobile operators could be misused in the same way. more

More than 5 million PCs connected to HSPA networks in Europe this year
According to new research report from the analyst firm Berg Insight, the European mobile broadband market will reach 5 million connections at the end of this year. Austria and Sweden are leading the way with hundreds of thousands of consumers signed up to affordable high-speed Turbo 3G (HSPA) network services delivering data rates up to 7 Mbps. more

Serbia - Penetration rises to 88%
Serbia has ended March 2007 with almost 7.2m mobile customers and a penetration rate of 88% - an increase of 1.8m customers and 22pp of penetration in the year. Market leader Telekom Srbija accounted for 71% of these net additions, with its only competitor Mobtel - now owned by telenor - picking up the 29% remainder. At the end of 2004 the two Serbian operators had almost identically sized customer bases, but since then steady growth from Telekom Srbija has contrasted with uncertain progress from Mobtel. more

Telekom Austria Close To Securing Serbian Mobile License
