Telenor Selects Huawei for LTE Network Trial in Norway
Huawei has announced that Norway's telenor has chosen it to provide LTE radio access and EPC (Evolved Packet Core) equipment for its LTE trial in Oslo. Aimed at testing services and applications, network handover and network throughput, the LTE trial will involve telenor' s Group Business Development & Research as well as several operating companies within the Group. more

Russian Bailiffs to Sell Telenor's Stake in VimpelCom
Russian bailiffs have passed an order to auction off telenor's shares in Russian mobile network operator, VimpelCom to cover a disputed US$1.7 billion fine. Responding to the news, telenor said that it has not received any other information from the Bailiff's office than what has been posted on the Bailiff's home page. more

Telenor strongly objects to statement from the Russian Bailiff
telenor has, unsurprisingly said that it strongly opposes any plans the Russian Bailiff's office may have of selling telenor's VimpelCom shares. "The enforcment of the claim of US$1.72 billion is based on an incorrect court decision that has no merit and should not take place," said Jan Edvard Thygesen, EVP and head of telenor's Central and Eastern European operations. more

Farimex Launches Attack Against Telenor in Ukraine
According to a statement from telenor, Farimex, reputed to be attacking telenor's investments in the Russian mobile operator VimpelCom, is also behind an investigation launched by the Anti-Monopoly Committee of Ukraine (AMC) against telenor and Kyivstar. telenor says that it was officially notified of the commenced investigation earlier this month. more

Telenor Q1 Net Profit Drops by 65%
Norway's telenor Group has reported that its first-quarter profits slumped by 65% to NOK1.62 billion (US$250 million) from NOK 4.57 billion (US$700 million) a year ago. Revenues rose by 6.8% though to reach NOK24.78 billion (US$3.8 billion) according to a statement from the company. However, EBITDA rose to NOK 7.84 billion (US$1.2 billion) before foreign exchange losses. more

India's Reliance Seeks 100 Million Subscribers by Year-End
India's Reliance Communications has set itself a target of breaking the 100 million subscriber mark before the end of this year - requiring an additional 25 million new customers to sign up to its network. The firm reported a surge in subscriptions following the launch of its GSM network, which overlays its existing CDMA service. more

According to a new study from Ovum, global economic downturn depressed valuations and dealmaking in the telecom sector in 4Q 2008. Based on Ovum's report, M&A deal count was 129 in 4Q08, from 192 in 4Q07, with only four deals valued above US$1 billion, from 10 in 4Q07. more

EU calls on mobile operators to continue to improve child safety policies
Half of 10 year-old, 87% of 13 year-old and 95% of 16 year-old children in the EU have a mobile phone, but half of European parents worry mobile phone use might expose their children to sexually and violently explicit images (51%) or bullying by other children (49%), according to a survey. The European Commission has now called on mobile operators to do more to keep children safe while using mobile phones by putting in place all the measures in the voluntary code of conduct, signed by 26 mobile operators in 2007. more
