China Mobile Reported to be in Talks to Buy Telenor Pakistan
China Mobile is reported to be in talks with Norway's Telenor concerning a merger of their respective Pakistani mobile networks. Although both the operators have denied any such development, sources told the local Dawn newspaper that negotiations were being held secretly at the group level. The deal is thought to involve China Mobile buying Telenor Pakistan and then merging the two networks. more

Pakistan Reports Second Slowest Subscriber Growth in Two Years
The latest figures from the Pakistani telecoms regulator show that the mobile market in Pakistan grew to 78.74m customers at the end of January. The figure for monthly net additions of 1.86m was 17% down on the January 2007 total, and also represented the second lowest figure for two years, the lowest being the 1.52m recorded last October. more

Telenor Pakistan says that it has become the first operator in the country to use solar energy to power one of its repeater sites. The pilot site, which is in Buner in the North-West Frontier Province is a solar-electricity hybrid system that runs entirely on solar energy during the day and switches to electricity or battery power at night. more

Asia Pacific Operators in Q3 '07: CDMA staging a revival?
The three months ended September 30th saw a record number of new connections in the Asia Pacific region. Overall, nearly 85 million new customers were connected which is very nearly as many as Germany, Europe's largest economy, has added in the 22 years since mobile service started. The vast majority of these chose to adopt either GSM or WCDMA technology, these two accounting for 66.1m and 9.4m of the total respectively. more
