Malaysia Sees Sharp Drop in Mobile Subscribers

Malaysia's prepaid registration programme came to an end in Q4 2006, during which time unregistered SIMs were disconnected from the networks of the country's three operators. In total there were almost 2.4m net disconnections between September and December, which implies that the total number of unregistered SIMs was nearer to 3m if normal organic growth in the quarter is assumed. more

Malaysia Q3 2006 Market Update

Mobile customer growth in Malaysia slowed significantly in Q3 2006 to just 1.5% on a proportionate basis, as a deceleration in growth at number three operator DiGi was compounded by a complete reversal at second placed Celcom due to the disconnection of inactives. The national total moved from 20.22m to 20.53m in the three months to 30th September 2006, which is a 17% improvement on 17.54m customers at the end of Q3 2005. more

Malaysia awards just two 3G licenses

Malaysia has awarded just two of its three available 3G licenses. Malaysia's two biggest telecom firms, Telekom Malaysia and Maxis Communications were awarded a license, while Time dotCom, TRI and newcomer E-Touch all failed to meet the regulators minimum limits for the license. Malaysia's third largest network, DiGi.Com did not bid for a license. more

Telekom Malaysia increases stake in rival network

Telekom Malaysia, the state owned landline network has purchased a 13.2% stake in the local cellular network, Technology Resources Industries (TRI), which trades under the Celcom brand name, after the government seized the stake from the local businessman, Tajudin Ramli following his debt default. Telekom Malaysia now holds 15.6% of TRI and says that it wants to merge the network, the country's second largest with its own fourth position network. Telekom paid US$189 million for the stake. more
