Germany Networks Working Towards Mobile Payments Launch by Year-End

­Germany's three largest mobile networks, Telefónica Germany, Telekom and Vodafone are pushing ahead with their joint activities in mobile payments. The three networks intend to register their payment service mpass as an independent company, and have signed a letter of understanding to this effect. EU calls on mobile operators to continue to improve child safety policies

Half of 10 year-old, 87% of 13 year-old and 95% of 16 year-old children in the EU have a mobile phone, but half of European parents worry mobile phone use might expose their children to sexually and violently explicit images (51%) or bullying by other children (49%), according to a survey. The European Commission has now called on mobile operators to do more to keep children safe while using mobile phones by putting in place all the measures in the voluntary code of conduct, signed by 26 mobile operators in 2007.  more

Tower Sharing Could Save $8 Billion Over 5 Years in MEA Region

Delta Partners has published a white paper about the potential of network sharing in the MEA region. The paper notes that there are currently over 200,000 mobile network towers in operation across the Middle East and Africa, in which operators invest annually between 10-20% of their revenues to rollout new sites or upgrade existing sites. Operators continue to make large investments in order to upgrade technologies and capacity as well as population coverage, especially in rural Africa.  more
