EU calls on mobile operators to continue to improve child safety policies

Half of 10 year-old, 87% of 13 year-old and 95% of 16 year-old children in the EU have a mobile phone, but half of European parents worry mobile phone use might expose their children to sexually and violently explicit images (51%) or bullying by other children (49%), according to a survey. The European Commission has now called on mobile operators to do more to keep children safe while using mobile phones by putting in place all the measures in the voluntary code of conduct, signed by 26 mobile operators in 2007.  more

ZTE Ships 100 Millionth Mobile Phone

China's ZTE  says that it has achived a sales record of 100 million handsets. ZTE originally started selling its handsets on a large-scale basis in 2002, with initial output reaching 1.8 million units and by 2004, ZTE had made 11 million units. To sustain the momentum and keep pace with stiff competition in the global handset arena, ZTE changed its handset business strategy from 2005 and opted to collaborate with global telecom carriers and service providers to further expand its global reach.  more

O2 Loses Legal Action Against Hutchison 3G UK

The European Court of Justice (ECJ) has ruled that Hutchison 3G UK did not breach trademark law when it used a marketing icon belonging to rival UK operator, O2 in one of its advertisements. O2 uses bubble images in a host of ways and is the proprietor of two British national trade marks which consist of a static picture of bubbles.  more

Eyes turn to Africa and Mid-East for telecoms M&A deals as private equity stalls

Africa and the Middle East are poised for increased M&A activity and consolidation in the telecoms industry following a global decline in deal value and volumes in 2007 - says a report from PricewaterhouseCoopers. The report reveals that the total disclosed deal value globally fell from ¢â€š¬332 billion in 2006 to ¢â€š¬185 billion in 2007, while deal volumes declined from 1,260 in 2006 to 1,190 in 2007.  more

UK Operators to Define a Common Standard for Mobile Advertising Reports

The GSM Association (GSMA) announced that the UK's five network operators, Vodafone Group, telefonica O2 Europe, T-Mobile, FT-Orange Group and Hutchison 3G, have formed a working group to define common metrics and measurement processes for mobile advertising as part of the GSMA's Mobile Advertising Programme.  more

EU Sets July Deadline for Data Roaming Cuts

GSMA Launches Mobile Alliance Against Child Sexual Abuse

The GSM Association, the global trade association for mobile operators, has launched the Mobile Alliance against Child Sexual Abuse Content to obstruct the use of the mobile environment by individuals or organisations wishing to consume or profit from child sexual abuse content. While the vast majority of child sexual abuse content is today accessed through conventional connections to the Internet, there is a danger that the broadband networks now being rolled out by mobile operators could be misused in the same way.  more

Setback for O2 in Hutchison 3G UK Trademark Dispute

A legal opinion from the European Court of Justice has found that the use of a competitors trademark in an advertisement is permitted under EU advertising rules. The decison comes from an appeal by UK operator O2 over the use of its "bubbles" trademark in an advert by rival operator, Hutchison 3G UK.  more
