Telefonica Announces Wide-Spread Trials of LTE Networks

­telefonica says that it has reached an agreement with six LTE technology providers to launch LTE test projects in six different countries. The suppliers telefonica has chosen so far: Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson, Huawei, NEC, Nokia Siemens Networks and ZTE, will start rolling out the equipment necessary for testing the technology during the coming months.  more

Telefonica Conducts 1st Tests of LTE Network in Spain

Spain's Telefónica has conducted its first tests on a live LTE network, installed at its Demonstrations Centre in Madrid. These initial real demonstrations or tests consisted of a VoIP call, and a videocall using an LTE mini-network installed by Ericsson; a video conference, and data and images downloads at speeds in excess of 140 Mbps, around 10 times those possible with current 3G networks using HSPA technology.  more

Industry to Settle on a Generic Phone Charger for All Mobile Phones

The GSMA and 17 mobile operators and manufacturers have announced that they are committed to implementing a cross-industry standard for a universal charger for new mobile phones. The aim of the initiative, led by the GSMA, is to ensure that the mobile industry adopts a common format for mobile phone charger connections and energy-efficient chargers resulting in an estimated 50 per cent reduction in standby energy consumption and the potential elimination of up to 51,000 tonnes of duplicate chargers.  more

Ericsson to trial rich communication services on Spainish network

Ericsson is to trial multimedia applications based on the Rich Communication Suite standard in cooperation with Spain's Telefónica. This is the world's first live demonstration of interoperable rich communication services.  more

Rich Communication Suite Will Bolster IMS Deployments

The Rich Communication Suite (RCS), a new initiative of a large group of handset and infrastructure vendors and mobile operators, promises to enhance the ability of wireless and wireline networks to offer interoperable rich communications. It is built on the IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) platform, and should boost IMS deployments significantly.  more

Ericsson deploys GSM/EDGE network for Digicel in Panama

Ericsson has signed a sole-supplier agreement with Digicel Group for the nationwide deployment of a GSM/EDGE network in Panama. The value of the contract was not disclosed, although it was recently reported that Digicel is planning to spend US$334 million on its Panama launch.  more
