Brazil Leads Lat-Am in Deployments, Connections and Demand for WiMAX and 3G Services
Signals Telecom Consulting has issued a commentary which notes that as from 2010 Brazil will account for the greatest number of WiMAX accesses in the Latin America and the Caribbean region, a position that it will keep in the medium term. Signals expects that the setting of regulations for the use of the 2.5 GHz and 3.5 GHz bands, plus the tendering of new bands, will provide a strong impulse to this technology in Brazil. Signals foresees the entry into the market of large-scale operators such as Telefónica (via TVA), which will use WiMAX to expand its area of operation outside Sao Paulo, and SKY (DirecTV), among others, which will join the current efforts being made by Embratel and Neovia. Signals expects that operators will carry out their own development to be able to add their own last mile. more

The Top Operators in Caribbean & LatAm by Subscriber Growth
Between them, the ten fastest growing operators in Latin America and the Caribbean added a total of over 52m new connections over the past year, or around two thirds of the region's 78m total. Quarter on quarter, the bias towards the industry leaders was even more pronounced, with 17.55m of the 19.0m or so new connections happening at the top end of the market. The quarter is somewhat atypical, due to the dismemberment of Telemig, which has boosted the numbers for both Vivo and TNL, but this is a region with an unusual concentration of power. more

Writing on the wall for CDMA in Latin America
The number of CDMA mobile customers in CALA (Caribbean and Latin America) has plummeted by almost 13m in the year to 31st March 2008, ending on 50.6m, after a seventh successive quarter of decline in Q1 08. The loss of customers widened to 3.72m in the first three months of 2008, from 1.61m in Q1 2007 and 2.73m in Q1 2007, although this was still below the loss of over 4m incurred in Q3 2007. As a result, the share of the national total for the technology fell from 19.8% to 12.7% - just half the share seen less than three years ago. more

Who are the Top 10 Operators in Lat-Am and The Caribbean?
The top 10 network operators in the Caribbean & Latin America region now all have over 10m customers as 10th placed Telecom Personal of Argentina crossed the 10m customer barrier in the quarter. The composition and order of the top 10 has remained unchanged throughout 2007, with Telecel in Mexico leading from Vivo and TIM in Brasil. Telcel has pulled ahead of its rivals, extending its lead over Vivo from 12.0m customers at the end of September 2006 to 16.2m customers a year later, whilst TIM closed the gap between it and its domestic rival from 4.6m to 2.2m customers during the year. more

Nortel: The dilemmas of wireless broadband adoption
The primary concern is the cost of handsets, which according to Kevin Taylor, Nortel's VP for mobility and converged core networks, can amount to 70% of an operator's costs when launching a new service. That cost can easily translate into a prohibitively high cost of the service for the end consumer. more

Who are the Fastest Growing Networks in Caribbean/Latin America?
The majority of the names on the list of the leading operators in Caribbean and Latin America (CALA) by customer numbers reappear on the list of the fastest growing - but not the first on the list. This is minor Mexican player Iusacell, which recorded 1.7m additions to take its total to 3.9m. However, the numbers have to be treated with caution - the vast majority of this growth came from the acquisition of Unefon which closed during the quarter. Without this, the number of new connections would have been below 0.5m - not enough to take a place in the top ten, let alone first. more
