Mexico's current spectrum auction has set off a change in the industry dynamics that could well have a big impact on major industry players, including Grupo Televisa, Telefónica and Carlos Slim's soon to be merged entities, Telmex and America Móvil. Televisa's cable ARPU is over three times Telefónica's mobile ARPU for 2009, according to numbers announced on Friday, and it will aim to use mobile as a means of attracting current mobile operators' customers to its cable packages.  more

Possible Delay to Mexican Radio Spectrum Auction

A Mexican court has accepted an appeal by MVS Comunicaciones and Iusacell and ordered a delay to the planned radio spectrum auction. The two companies had argued that the current bidding rules were unfair. A further hearing is to be held and a decision whether the auction can proceed is expected by mid-week.  more

Mexico Raises Spectrum Cap on Forthcoming Auction

The Mexican anti-trust commission, CFC has reviewed the details of the forthcoming radio spectrum auction and raised the spectrum cap to 90MHz per individual mobile network operator. The previous plans had imposed a limit of 80Mhz.  more

Mexico Radio Spectrum Auction Could Raise $1.5 Billion

Mexico's government could look forward to charging US$1.5 billion for wireless radio spectrum which is due to be auctioned off later this year. Basing its estimate on recent auctions in other country's, banking group, Banamex said that the government should expect between US$1-$1.5 billion from the licenses.  more

Chile Publishes Details of 3G License Tender

The Chilean telecoms regulator, Subtel has published the tender details for a round of 3G licenses, which it anticipates will bring a new entrant into the market. The auction for the licenses is due to be held in July, a notice on the regulators website announced.  more

India, Czech Republic and Estonia Announce iPhone Launch Details

India's Bharti Airtel, Estonia's EMT and the Czech Republic's telefonica O2 have all announced today that they will start selling Apple's 3G iPhone from August 22nd. All three companies declined to give pricing details at until closer to the launch date.  more

Mexico's Wireless Subscribers Reach 71 Million at End-March

Digicel Wins Mobile License in Panama

Digicel Central America has won a competitive bid process for a license to operate a GSM mobile network in Panama. The auction took place on Wednesday, May 7th, with Digicel bidding US$86 million. Digicel's win for a mobile license in Panama is the latest milestone for the company's expansion efforts in Central America. Digicel currently operates in El Salvador and has plans to launch in Honduras later this year.  more
