Chile Publishes Details of 3G License Tender
The Chilean telecoms regulator, Subtel has published the tender details for a round of 3G licenses, which it anticipates will bring a new entrant into the market. The auction for the licenses is due to be held in July, a notice on the regulators website announced. more

Quality not quantity for Entel Chile as new growth dries up
Both net additions and growth figures at Chilean incumbent Entel have fallen to record lows for the second successive quarter. The size of the potential market for new additions looks to be steadily decreasing in the country as the penetration rate approaches 100%; Telefonica Moviles may yet be in with a surprise, but we doubt it. EntelÃ's situation was also worsened this quarter by the fact that America MovilÃ's Chilean operation took a greater share of the new connections than its larger competitor for the first time in six quarters - although the size of the premium this time (51k to 28k) versus that in Q1 07 (178k to 118k) indicates just how much new growth has dried up in that time. EntelÃ's churn rates bear testament to this: churn actually hit a six-quarter low of 1.75% in Q3 08, and still net growth fell to its lowest ever level. more

The top 10 network operators in the Caribbean & Latin America region now all have over 10m customers as 10th placed Telecom Personal of Argentina crossed the 10m customer barrier in the quarter. The composition and order of the top 10 has remained unchanged throughout 2007, with Telecel in Mexico leading from Vivo and TIM in Brasil. Telcel has pulled ahead of its rivals, extending its lead over Vivo from 12.0m customers at the end of September 2006 to 16.2m customers a year later, whilst TIM closed the gap between it and its domestic rival from 4.6m to 2.2m customers during the year. more

Millicom Comments on Interconnection Rate Cuts in Colombia
Millicom International Cellular has commented on the initiatives announced by the Colombian Regulator last week. The interconnect rate has been reduced with immediate effect from approximately US 12 cents to 6 cents and, as part of the new regulations, the interconnection between operators will continue to be symmetric but charged on a per second basis. more

Movistar posts 273% rise in net profits in Jan-Sep
The statement is the first time Movistar has presented results under the new group name Telefonica Moviles Chile. In July the company completed its restructuring and merger of what were the former mobile operations of Bellsouth and the local mobile operations of Telefonica. Telefonica acquired Bellsouth's mobile operations in 10 Latin American countries in 2004. more
