Telecom New Zealand Full Year Profits Drop 15.5%
Telecom New Zealand has reported an annual profit of NZ$713 million (US$512 million), down 15.5 per cent from NZ$844 million (US$606 million) a year ago. The company reported though that revenue for the year was $5,673 million (US$4.07 billion), a 2% increase on the prior year, while expenses rose 5% to $3,782 million (US$2.7 billion), in part reflecting the costs of transformation and operational separation. This resulted in a 4% decline in EBITDA. more

Telecom New Zealand has made its initial test call on a WCDMA network - confirming that it is on track for a commercial launch by the end of this year. Telecom CEO Dr Paul Reynolds said the new network represented Telecom making it better for New Zealand consumers and businesses alike. more

New Zealand is set to get a third mobile operator - to compete with incumbents Telecom New Zealand and Vodafone - after the two operators agreed to release some of their radio spectrum to the new entrant. The decision to release the spectrum was a condition for the government to renew the operators existing licenses for another twenty years from 2011/2012. more

Cook Islands Operator Completes GSM Softswitch Migration
Telecom Cook Islands has completed the commercial deployment of a GSM softswitch from ADC. The new softswitch -- which upgrades the carrier's core wireless network to more efficient, IP-based technology -- has been in deployment since September of 2007, and the final network cutover was accomplished last week. The network upgrade enabled by the UltraWave GSM softswitch includes an overall expansion of the network's capacity from 8,000 to 15,000 subscribers along with new services such as prepaid calling, SMS, voicemail, and GPRS data. more

Telecom New Zealand Completes CDMA Rev A Rollout
Telecom New Zealand says that its upgrade to its nationwide Mobile Broadband network with ‘Rev A' technology is now complete. The last mobile site to be upgraded was at the remote Pihanga Trig, near Turangi, with technicians flying to the site by helicopter. The site provides Mobile Broadband coverage on the Desert Road, State Highway One. more

The CDMA Development Group (CDG) has announced that there are now 47 operators in 33 countries that have selected CDMA2000® 1xEV-DO Revision A (Rev. A) to deliver advanced broadband services, of which 13 of them are commercial. The number of operators that have decided to deploy Rev. A has more than doubled within the past 8 months, with the greatest amount of adoption coming from emerging markets. more
