Telecom Italia Mobile Lost 1.5 Million Customers in 2008

The Italian market lost a total of 135k customers over the year, with net losses in Q2 and Q4 trumping the smaller net gains in the other two periods. The year closed with a total base of 88.58m, compared to 88.72m, while penetration dropped from 152.6% to 152.4%.  more

3 Italia Denies Report of 3G Network Break-Up

In a terse statement, 3 Italia has firmly denied the story published by Sole 24 Ore regarding the sale of company assets to Italian competitors. Italian GSM network to be asset stripped

The Italian GSM network, Blu has decided to split itself up and sell its assets to four of its competitors, having failed to find a buyer who wanted to keep the company intact. Blu says that it has submitted details of the plan to Italy's Communications Ministry and it would be conditional on approval from both the Italian and European regulators. more

Italy announces 3G auction terms

The Italian government has published the final details of the 3G auction in Italy. There will be a minimum price of US$380 million, and the bidding will start in September. Interested companies need to declare their interest by 10th August, and have bank deposits of at least US$380 million. Currently, seven consortium have declared an interest in bidding for one of the five available 3G licenses. Telecom Italia Mobile; Omnitel Pronto Italia, and Wind has created Blu, in which British Telecom PLC has a 20% stake; Dix.it, backed by the Agnelli family holding company IFIL, Pirelli and Banca di Roma; Andala, led by the Sardinian Internet company Tiscali; and Atlanet, with the participation of Spain's Telefonica." more
