Telecom Egypt starts to plan its GSM network

Telcordia Technologies has won a contract from Telecom Egypt to carry out the network design for its upcoming GSM network. The companies did not disclose the value of the order. Telecom Egypt recently agreed to pay US$463 million for a GSM license to resolve a long standing dispute over claims that it already owned a license and didn't need to pay to acquire it again. The network will not go live until December 2002 due to an existing Duopoly agreement with the two existing GSM networks in the country. No infrastructure contracts have been awarded yet. more

Egypt's third GSM network cleared

Egypt's telecoms regulator has announced that Telecom Egypt will have to pay a license fee to use its cellular license. The company had maintained that when it sold its cellular network to MobiNil in 1997, that it had retained the cellular license. The regulator has ow ruled that the company will have to pay US$466 million after the two existing networks had complained that they had paid for their licenses, and therefore Telecom Egypt should have to pay for its license. Telecom Egypt is now looking for a foreign partner to take up to a 34% stake in the new network, which can begin commercial services at the end of next year, after the current duopoly expires." more

Egypt to get a third cellular network

The Egyptian government owned Telecom Egypt has said that it will not buy a new cellular phone license, but is willing to pay fees to provide cellular services in the country. Telecom Egypt sold its cellular network to the MobiNil in 1997, but claims to still hold a license to provide cellular services. The telecoms regulator has now approved Telecom Egypt's request to start a cellular network, but not until December 2002, when the current Duopoly between MobiNil and Vodafone Click is due to expire." more

Possible third cellular license in Egypt

A row has broken out in Egypt after Telecom Egypt claimed that it still owned a cell phone license. Telecom Egypt sold its cellular operations to MobiNil in 1997, but as it approaches privatisation, Communications Minister Ahmed Nazif has said that he is looking for a strategic partner for its planned cellular network. The chairman of Orascom Telecom, which owns 31% of MobiNil said "Egypt Telecom is in clear violation of the licence granted to us which clearly stipulated that a third licence can only be given for an equal price,"" more
