Mexican Mobile Telephony Revenues Will Surpass $11.9 Billion Mark by 2013

Signals Telecom Consulting has published a report which examines the Mexican mobile services market with a focus on the Value Added Services (VAS) offered by local mobile operators. The report notes that the Mexican market is characterized by a VAS offering focused on SMS services. The slowdown in subscriber growth and the development of 3G networks, however, will force operators to aggressively pursue a VAS offering that is not focused on text messaging.  more

Ericsson Wins Mexican Microwave Contract

Ericsson says that it has been selected by Mexico's telcel to provide microwave-transmission links for high-speed mobile broadband. The agreement is Ericsson's largest microwave deal in Latin America so far, and the company will provide telcel with microwave-transmission links for 2G and 3G/HSPA based on the Ericsson MINI-LINK TN solution. This is a turnkey project in which Ericsson will provide full customer, equipment and field support.  more

GSM Family Subscriptions Reach 3 Billion Worldwide

The trade body, 3G Americas has announced that the world now has 3 billion mobile phone users based on the GSM family (inc UMTS), based upon research and projections by Informa Telecoms and Media. Today, 88% of the world's 3.5 billion mobile wireless subscriptions are to the GSM family of technologies.  more

Mexico's Telcel Launches HSDPA Coverage

Mexico's telcel has announced the commercial launch of its HSDPA service - initially in four cities - with plans to expand service to nine additional cities, for a total of thirteen cities covered in this first phase of HSDPA deployment. With the launch of 3G services in Mexico by telcel, its parent company, América Móvil, has now completed eight commercial UMTS/HSDPA 3G networks in Latin America, operated by Argentina CTI, Brazil Claro, Chile Claro, Colombia Comcel, El Salvador Claro, Uruguay CTI and Paraguay CTI.  more
