Alcatel-Lucent Wins Chinese Contracts Worth $1.7 Billion
Alcatel-Lucent has inked two framework agreements valued US$1.7 billion in total with China Mobile and China Telecom, to provide network upgrades, integration and maintenance services in 2009. The agreements were secured through Alcatel-Lucent Shanghai Bell, Alcatel-Lucent's Chinese company. more

Qualcomm and Broadcom Wave a Paper and Declare "Peace For Our Time"
The acrimonious patent battle between Qualcomm and Broadcom is finally over. The two firms have entered into a settlement and multi-year patent agreement, which will result in the dismissal with prejudice of all litigation between the companies, including all patent infringement claims in the International Trade Commission and U.S. District Court in Santa Ana, as well as the withdrawal by Broadcom of its complaints to the European Commission and the Korea Fair Trade Commission. more

China Mobile Full-Year Profits Up 30 Percent
China Mobile has reported an 29.6 percent rise in its full-year earnings to reach RMB 112.8 billion (US$16.53 billion), but warned that profits growth slowed in the final quarter as competition intensified and the economic slowdown took its toll. Full-year operating revenues reached RMB 412.3 billion (US$60.4 billion), up 15.5 percent. year-on-year. more

Nokia Siemens Networks Wins Chinese Contracts Worth $1.1 Billion
China Mobile and China Unicom have separately signed agreements to purchase 2G and 3G mobile equipments and services from Nokia Siemens Networks during 2009. Under the framework agreements Nokia Siemens Networks will roll out WCDMA networks for China Unicom in 11 provinces across China. In addition, it will provide China Mobile with td-scdma and GSM networks. more

Nortel Completes LTE-TDD Wireless Demo in China
Nortel says that it has successfully completed the first end-to-end video streaming session using a Time Division Duplex (TDD)-based LTE network, working with commercial grade LTE Base Station and device prototypes in China. LTE Subscribers: From Zero to 32 Million in Three Years
Despite the fact that no LTE (Long Term Evolution) network is expected to be commercial before 2010, a new study from ABI Research forecasts that by 2013, there will be more than 32 million subscribers using LTE networks. China Mobile to Join in LTE FDD/TDD Trials
As has been expected, China Mobile has confirmed that it is set to join LTE (Long Term Evolution) trials already being carried out by Vodafone and Verizon Wireless. The resultant three-way operator trials will focus on LTE FDD (the Frequency Division Duplex version of LTE) for use with paired spectrum allocations and TD-LTE (the Time Division Duplex version of LTE) as an evolution of current td-scdma technology to enable the exploitation of unpaired spectrum globally. more

Mobile broadband key to future mobile strategy and revenues
Mobile broadband will generate more than US$400 billion in service revenues in 2012, according to a new report from Informa Telecoms & Media. Detailed subscriber and device forecasts in the report find that HSPA will be the leading mobile broadband system in 2012 by number of subscribers, followed by EV-DO and Mobile WiMAX. EV-DO will have the most subscribers at end-2007 but will be overtaken by HSDPA in 2009. td-scdma will also become a significant force in the mobile broadband market with close to 50 million subscribers in China by 2012. more
