Iran Looking to Sell Large Stake in State Owned Telco
The Iranian government has announced plans to sell off a second stake in the state owned telecoms operator, the Telecommunication Company of Iran (tci). The government recently floated a five percent stake on the local stock market and had been expected to seek an external investor. Ali Rahmani, managing director of the Tehran Stock Exchange has now confirmed that a 49% stake will be sold to a single investor, with a foreign party being invited to take up to 35% of the company. more

Who are the Top 10 Operators in the Middle East and Africa?
After a comparatively quiet second quarter, the mobile market in the Middle East and Africa has bounced back with a record number of new customers. Over 32 million net additions were made in the three months to end September, some 2 million more than were connected in the previous best quarter, Q4 2006. As has been the case for most of this year, the bulk of the growth has come from Africa, rather than the Middle East, with Egypt, Nigeria, Kenya and South Africa producing the strongest gains. The most notable exception to this generality is Iran, where additional competition is spurring growth. more

Turkcell Seeks Arbitration in Iran License Dispute
Turkey's Turkcell says that it has started international arbitration procedures over difficulties it experienced in launching a new network in Iran. According to the statement released to the Istanbul Stock Exchange, Turkcell said that it had incurred significant loses on its investments after Iran granted a license to a consortium led by Turkcell in February 2004 to operate a GSM network in the country. more

The mobile market in the Middle East and Africa seemed to slow down in the second quarter of 2007. Indeed, we have to go back four years, to the second quarter of 2003, to find its equal. In both periods, the market grew by 8.0%, but while this implied fewer than 5 million new connections in 2003, in 2007, it meant 24 million. Looking across the markets what we see is that most of the fastest growing businesses were in Africa, rather than the Middle East, where markets are characterised by much higher penetration rates. more
