Subscriber Barriers Broken in India
India's mobile market passed three milestones in September: the CDMA customer base broke through 50 million, GSM surpassed 150 million and the total market by consequence broke the 200 million barrier. With 205.3 million customers, India is still considerably short of the USA - the world's second largest mobile market with 243.3 million customers at the end of Q2 - but with proportionate growth at 66.8% in the 12 months to the end of September (compared to the USA's 10.4% at the end of June), India may well overtake the USA by the end of 2008. Given that India's penetration rate was just 18.4% at the end of September while the USA's was approximately 82%, an eventual change in the ranking is inevitable. more
