Nokia Staff Stage Walkout over Job Cuts
Thousands of Nokia staff walked out on strike last Friday in protest at the company's recently announced plan to cut up to 700 jobs. Up to 8,500 office staff was set to stop working at 2 pm at Nokia's tampere and Oulu offices, according to Susanna Konttinen, representative for the Union of Salaried Employees. The strike was to last the remainder of Friday afternoon, although it is not clear how many staff participated in the walkout. more

Mobile phone to be tested as travel card in Tampere
The use of mobile phones in current public transport systems is being tested in tampere, the third largest city in Finland. The trial will also collect experiences to be utilized in revamping the tampere City ticket system. TeliaSonera, TietoEnator and Nokia have together developed a service entity where the mobile phone is used as a travel card in public transport. Another 3G network launches in Finland
Sonera Corporation opened its Finnish 3G network on January 1, 2002. In line with the licence conditions, Sonera's UMTS network operates in the largest four towns in Finland, i.e. the Helsinki metropolitan area, Oulu, tampere and Turku. The network will be expanded in future based on commercial demand. Commercial service provision is scheduled to start when UMTS phones are available to consumers. Until then, the Finnish UMTS network will be in Sonera's own test use. Sonera estimates that the UMTS market in Finland will be launched on a wider scale in 2004 and 2005. more

Radiolinja purchases GSM network
Radiolinja has purchased a GSM network from Soon Communications Plc in Finland. With this acquisition, Radiolinja has acquired ownership of the radiotechnical shares in its use in the tampere region, in the south of Finland. The masts, equipment facilities and transfer connections used in Radiolinja's network, which are located in the same region are owned by Soon Net, a subsidiary of Soon Communications. Radiolinja will continue to lease aerial and equipment facilities and transfer connections from Soon Net. Cooperation with Soon Net will also continue in the construction and maintenance of the GSM network." more
