MTS India Expands Network Coverage to Jharkhand

India's Idea Cellular - Pressure in Many Markets as Churn Balloons

Net additions at India's fifth largest mobile player, IDEA Cellular, declined in Q2 09 compared to the first three months of the year by more than 17%, despite the launch of two new circles. Services got under way in Orissa in April and then in Tamil Nadu in May, bringing the total coverage to 15 of India's 23 telecoms circles after launches in Mumbai and Bihar in the second half of last year. The two new operations contributed 0.22m new customers in the quarter, but a crash in net adds in Mumbai from 427k in Q1 09 to 189k in Q2 limited the overall increase in the four new circles to 1.00m, down from 1.02m three months ago. Yet IDEA's 11 established circles performed worse, with net additions off in all but two circles, and by 21% in aggregate.  more

Mobile Number Portability More Attractive to India's Postpaid Users

The introduction of Mobile Number Portability is considered good news for consumers, but presents a looming threat for mobile operators since it presents consumers with the choice of retaining their current mobile phone numbers even if they change their operator. And according to a recently conducted Mobile Consumer Insights study conducted by The Nielsen Company to gauge consumer attitudes and behavior towards mobile operators in India, it seems that close to one in five (18%) Indian mobile phone subscribers would change their mobile operator if Mobile Number Portability is introduced into the market.  more

Department of Telecom Updates on Indian 3G License Plans

India's Department of Telecom (DoT) has announced the availability of the radio spectrum that will be made available if and when the 3G licenses are finally auctioned. The document shows that the government could earn an additional Rs 21,480 crore if the frequencies are auctioned according to the finance ministry's formula.  more

Idea Cellular to Upgrade Indian GPRS Capacity

Nokia Siemens Networks has won a contract from Indian network operator, Idea to upgrade its GPRS network capabilities. Nokia Siemens Networks will add GPRS capability to 10 IDEA telecom service areas, while the existing GPRS capability in 12 other areas will be expanded.  more

MTS India Partners with IBM for Data Centers

IBM has won a contract from MTS India, , the mobile telephony services brand of Sistema Shyam TeleServices (SSTL) to design and build two data centres - one each in Chennai and Gurgaon - for the company. The data centre solution being deployed by IBM provides the facility to scale power and cooling automatically depending on the load. IBM will also build a Network Operations Centre (NOC) to help the SSTL team monitor and manage applications and network in a 24/7 environment.  more

Russia's MTS Launches a CDMA Network in India

Russian backed Indian mobile network operator, Sistema Shyam Teleservices (SSTL) has launched its CDMA network Tamil Nadu, Chennai and Pondicherry, under the MTS brand. The company outlined plans for a US$5 billion investment over the next five years, and expects to list on the local stock-exchange by the end of next year.  more

Aircel Announces $5 Billion Investment Plan

India's Aircel has announced plans to double its subscriber base and invest US$5 billion in its network over the next three to five years. The firm, a majority owned subsidary of Malaysia's Maxis, will spend at least US$1 billion during 2009 and expects to end the year with 32 million customers.  more

A Transgendered Mobile Phone

A group of charities in India which help transgendered people (known as hijras) away from begging and prostitution have signed a deal to set up a mobile phone assembly factory. Nokia, Motorola and Foxconn have sub-contracted assembling of spare parts to the MASS Trust.  more

Shyam Telelink Connects 100,000th CDMA Subscriber

Indian phone network, Shyam Telelink, a subsidiary of Russia's Sistema, says that it has connected the one hundred thousandth subscriber to its CDMA 800 MHz mobile network in the state of Rajasthan since its launch on September 30, 2008. The growth of Shyam TelelinkÃ's subscriber base has exceeded its business plan by 1.5 times.  more
