Taiwan Debates Renewing GSM Licenses in 2012
There is a dispute amongst Taiwan's mobile network operators over the fate of the existing GSM licenses which are due to expire in 2012. The incumbent holders want them renewed, while the 3G and WiMAX license holders want the licenses terminated and the radio spectrum refarmed to all the companies. more

Both Taiwan's Chunghwa and Taiwan Mobile record declines in ARPU
Chunghwa is TaiwanÃ's market leader in terms of customer numbers, while Taiwan Mobile occupied second position at the end of Q2 08, just ahead of FarEasTone. However, Taiwan Mobile recorded a net gain of just 700 customers in Q3 08, which means that FarEasTone only has to add more than 1000 customers to take its second place. Taiwan Mobile finished Q3 with 6.22m customers, while Chunghwa increased its lead to more than 2.6m with an end-quarter total of 8.87m. more

Fareastone loses customers but pips Taiwan Mobile for second in July
Taiwanese operator Fareastone lost customers in Q2 2008 for the first time since the removal of inactive accounts from the base in 2005 and 2006. Nevertheless, the net quarterly decrease was only 3,000 - a decline which was promptly reversed in July with the addition of 9,000 new connections on a net basis. more
Taiwan Expected to Pass 11 Million 3G Subscribers by Year-End
Taiwan is expected to exceed 11 million 3G subscribers by the end of this year, based on faster than expected sales by the local network operators. The China Economic News Service reports that Far EasTone has already signed up 2.2 million 3G subscribers, exceeding its original goal of having two million subscribers by the end of this year. more

Taiwan Mobile Upgrades MMSC Platform
Taiwan Mobile has deployed a replacement MMSC from Comverse to upgrade and consolidate its multimedia messaging (MMS) service in Taiwan. Taiwan Mobile recently consolidated its three portfolio operators: Taiwan Cellular Corporation, TransAsia Telecommunications and Mobitai Communications, each of which had its own MMS solution from a different vendor, including one from Comverse. more

Chunghwa and Taiwan Mobile Q1 2008 Results
TaiwanÃ's two largest mobile companies, Chunghwa Telecom and Taiwan Mobile, both released first quarter results this week. In fact, the results show that whilst Chunghwa maintains a clear premium over the competition of 2.5m customers at the top of the market, Taiwan CellularÃ's lead over its nearest rival, third-placed FarEasTone, fell to just 2,070 customers at the end of March. The operator suffered its first negative net additions since Q1 06, losing 6,500 customers to finish the quarter on 6.228m, just ahead of FarEasTone with 6.226m. more

Smartcard firm, Gemalto has been chosen by Taiwan Mobile to provide the world's first commercial NFC (Near Field Communication) SIM-based mobile contactless system. The development is important as it avoids the need for customers to have to upgrade their handset, as they can simply get a new SIM card.
