Thailand's TAC Unable to Launch 3G Services until 2009
Thailand's Total Access Communication (tac) says that it will not be able to launch its 3G network until early next year at the earliest due to regulatory problems. The company had formed a partnership with CAT Telecom to deploy a 3G network on its existing radio spectrum but says that its partner has not yet approved the plan. CAT Telecom is state owned. more

New IMEI protocols for GSM handsets
From the begining of this year, a new IMEI allocation procedure has been in place. The changes relate to the format of the IMEI; the Final Assembly Code (FAC) will be obsolete and be set to 00 for the period from 01/01/2003 until 31/03/2004. Nokia and Total Access Communications (tac) in Thailand have signed a contract for the expansion of the tac GSM network. The deal, valued at over US$150 million includes a GPRS upgrade. tac was founded on August 31,1989 and has offered both analog (WorldPhone 800) and digital cellular services (WorldPhone 1800) using the 800 MHz frequency band and 1800 MHz frequency band respectively. By the end of 2001, more than one thousand new cell sites will be added to the system." more

The company has also initiated a price war in the country by offering free line subscription to all its new customers, for five years. The company also plans to spend US$340 million on improving its network over the next twelve months. Dtac still needs regulatory approval to drop its monthly service charge for its customers." more

Thailand networks running out of phone numbers
The Thailand based GSM network, tac has applied to the telecoms regulator for an urgent supply of new mobile phone numbers. The company has less than 500,000 numbers, of which more than half are disconnected from former customers. As the company is connecting around 100,000 subscribers per month, the company says it is at risk of running out of available phone numbers within three months. "tac has should introduce for operators eight-digit phone number, ahead of its original plan for January 1, 2002," said Pitjapol Jantanasaro, deputy managing director of tac." more

The Communications Authority of Thailand (CAT), has been called in to arbitrate a dispiute between Thailand's two GSM1800 networks. Total Access Communication (tac) has threatened to stop providing roaming services to DPC this month. If it does so, about 60,000 DPC subscribers would be unable to make or receive calls outside of Bangkok. tac is claiming that DPC had violated the roaming contract by failing to install its own network in the provinces, as stipulated by the contract, howeverChoksiri Rodboonpha, DPC's director of marketing, said DPC had done nothing to violate the contract and was therefore fully entitled to the service." more
