Active RAN Sharing Could Save Operators $60 Billion

A new study from ABI Research finds that the worldwide combined OPEX and CAPEX savings from active infrastructure sharing could amount to as much as $60 billion over the next five year period. The study finds that operators could enjoy at least 40% cost savings in addition to those available from passive site sharing.  more

ADC has announced that its InterReach Fusion in-building cellular system has been deployed to provide strong and consistent coverage at Mandarin Oriental, Boston. The system currently provides augmented coverage for t-mobile customers, although it can also support traffic from additional mobile operators who choose to use it.  more

T-Mobile UK Facing $895 Million Lawsuit

A long running court case is to proceed after solicitors filed a case with the UK's High Court against t-mobile which could potentially cost the network operator £625 million (US$895 million). The lawsuit is being filed by now-bankrupt SIM care reseller, VIP Communications.  more

Ericsson Expands 3G Netowork Management Contract in the UK

Mobile Broadband Network Limited (MBNL), the 50:50 joint venture formed by 3 UK and t-mobile UK to integrate and manage their 3G radio access networks (RAN), has selected Ericsson to provide managed services to complete the consolidation of their 3G infrastructure. Under the terms of the contract, about 220 t-mobile staff have transferred to Ericsson.  more

IPWireless Sold to its Management

IPWireless was been sold to its management by its parent company, NextWave Wireless and secured long term financing with a significant (if unnamed) strategic partner. IPWireless was founded in 1999 and was acquired in May, 2007 by NextWave Wireless and became part of the NextWave Network Products division. In an announcement on December 26, 2008 NextWave disclosed that it had sold 75 percent of IPWireless to IPW Holdings, an entity formed by the senior IPWireless management team.  more

3G Upgrade for Indiana and Atlanta

t-mobile USA is close to signing a network upgrade contract in the Indiana market to add 3G services to its base stations. The work on these sites should start by the end of December and be substantially completed by the end of the first quarter of 2009.  more

T-Mobile Tests Hydrogen Powered Base Station

t-mobile Hungary has commissioned the first base station in the country to be operated with hydrogen based PEM cells. t-mobile (Magyar Telekom) says that the only other trials of hydrogen based PEM cells to power base stations have only been carried out with a few base stations in Sweden so far.  more

BT Signs 3G Backhaul Contract with T-Mobile and 3 UK

t-mobile UK and Hutchison 3G UK, through their joint venture company, Mobile Broadband Network Ltd (MBNL), have signed a five-year managed network solutions agreement with the UK's dominant landline operator, BT to provide links connecting 7,500 base station sites on their consolidated 3G infrastructure.  more
