Electricity Meters to Transmit Usage Data over T-Mobile Network

Echelon Corp. and T-Mobile USA have announced an alliance to accelerate the adoption of the smart grid in the North American market by reducing the communications cost of smart meters through the deployment of Echelon's Networked Energy Services (NES) system over T-Mobile's GSM network. As part of the agreement, Echelon will utilize an embedded T-Mobile SIM within a cellular radio module to enable all the Echelon smart meters on a given low voltage transformer to communicate back to the utility over the smart grid, and T-Mobile will offer users of Echelon's NES system and pricing plans for data usage.  more

Deutsche Telekom Issues Profits Warning - May Write Down T-Mobile Value

Deutsche Telekom has issued a profits warning, and now expects adjusted EBITDA in 2009 to be 2 to 4 percent below last year. The company is now expecting to post EBITDA in the range of EUR18.7 billion - EUR19.1 billionn (US$24.7 billionn) after an initial forecast of EUR19.5 billion.  more

US Operators Sign-Up to Mobile Marketing Agreement

The USA's four largest mobile network operators, Verizon Wireless, AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile USA have all signed up to abide by marketing guidelines from the Mobile Marketing Association (MMA). In addition to the four largest US wireless service providers, there was substantial help in securing this agreement from the major aggregators, brands and content owners. In specific, VeriSign, Neustar, Limbo, and Thumbplay, all played critical roles in the process.  more

T-Mobile USA Obtains Another Injunction Against Prepaid Phone Traffickers

T-Mobile USA says that it has obtained a final judgment and permanent injunction as part of its efforts to combat the unauthorized bulk purchase and resale of T-Mobile's prepaid mobile phones and accessories. The order was handed down by a federal court in Brooklyn, N.Y., permanently enjoining DK Wireless (which does business as "Wireless Touch" and "Talk 2 Me"), IA Communication, and the companies' principal, Ajay Mehta, from continuing to traffic in T-Mobile prepaid wireless phones.  more

Deutsche Telekom Surprises with a Fourth-Quarter Loss

Deutsche Telekom has reported a surprise fourth-quarter loss on an impairment charge and shaken up its management team to focus on regions as opposed to industry segments. The company reported a loss of €730 million (US$920 million), compared to a loss of €750 million a year ago. The loss was blamed on a write down of the value of Greece's Hellenic Telecommunications Organization (OTE).  more

Samsung Mobile and T-Mobile USA have announced the upcoming availability of the Samsung Memoir, a 3G touch-screen mobile phone equipped with an 8-megapixel camera. T-Mobile Offering Motorola's Carbon-Neutral Mobile Phone

T-Mobile USA says that it has secured exclusive rights to the Motorola W233 Renew mobile phone - the plastics of which are made from recycled water bottles. Through an alliance with Carbonfund, Motorola also offsets the carbon dioxide required to manufacture, distribute and operate the phone through investments in renewable energy sources and reforestation, making it the first carbon-neutral mobile phone.  more

Deutsche Telekom substantially increased its customer numbers in 2008

Deutsche Telekom has issued a trading statement and says that it saw encouraging developments in its mobile communications markets during last year. The number of customers with the companies in Europe and the United States totaled 128.3 million. This means that the number of customers increased organically by 7.6 million. The contract customer segment accounts for 5 million of this growth with a current customer base of 65.9 million.  more
