Telefonica O2 Interesting in Buying T-Mobile UK
Telefonica's O2 subsidiary would be interested in putting in a bid for T-Mobile UK if its parent company, Deutsche Telekom decides to put it up for sale. In an interview with Financial Times Deutschland, Telefonica's European CEO, Matthew Key said that any acquisition would be likely to require an investigation by the UK's regulators as the merged company would have a market share in excess of 40%. more

France Telecom is reported to have made an offer to buy T-Mobile UK, but was rebuffed by T-Mobile's German parent company, Deutsche Telekom. The UK's Guardian newspaper also noted that Vodafone was rumoured to have offered to do a swap for its Turkish subsidiary, although the deal was denied by Vodafone. more

Deutsche Telekom Posts Q1 Loss on T-Mobile Write Down
Germany's Deutsche Telekom has reported a net loss of EUR 1.1 billion (US$1.46 billion) for the first-quarter of this year, compared to a profit of EUR 900 million a year ago. The loss was largely blamed on an expected EUR 1.8 billion (US$2.4 billion) write-down on the valuation of T-Mobile UK. Adjusted profit was EUR 700 million (US$931 million), which is a 12.7% decline on the previous year, reflecting a slight downward trend in operational terms. more

Deutsche Telekom has issued a profits warning, and now expects adjusted EBITDA in 2009 to be 2 to 4 percent below last year. The company is now expecting to post EBITDA in the range of EUR18.7 billion - EUR19.1 billionn (US$24.7 billionn) after an initial forecast of EUR19.5 billion. more
