Nortel's bankruptcy filing enables radical change, and not just at Nortel

On 14 January 2009, Nortel Networks moved beyond talk of divestiture and
speculation of bankruptcy, and filed for creditor protection in Canada and the
US, with Nortel UK entering administration separately under a filing managed by
Ernst & Young. The company reached this point after multiple management
regimes failed in their attempts to remake the company after the bursting of the
telecoms bubble. Nortel's move may result in a more balanced industry
structure for communications equipment.

Who are the Top 20 European Network Operators?
The European mobile market is gradually becoming more democratic, with virtually every market seeing penetration levels of 100% or more. In this environment, there are few changes and the list of the largest operators reflects this. Only one company has entered this list over the last quarter and, in all, there have only been two changes in position. T-Mobile Germany has overtaken Turkcell, to regain the second spot in Europe, behind TIM of Italy, while Polkomtel of Poland has nudged its compatriot PTC out of the top 20, by a margin of less than 0.25m. more

T-Mobile's third quarter results have been overshadowed by the news that its former CEO, Kai-Uwe Ricke, has been ousted from his post as Deutsche Telecom's Chief Executive. We comment upon that in our features section at the end of this issue, so what of the numbers? These show a near 7% increase in revenues, year on year to €8.2bn, but a 2% drop in EBITDA to €2.68bn and a drop of 10% in operating profit, which emerged at €1.39bn, down from €1.54bn in the same quarter of last year. more
