Etisalat Interested in Investments in Syria and Lebanon
UAE based Emirates Telecommunication Co. (Etisalat) is seeking opportunities in Syria and Lebanon as licenses and privatisations are launched. The company is expecting to be able to bid for the third mobile license in Syria later this year, and will be interested in the privatisation of Lebanon's two mobile networks, if and when that eventually occurs. more

US Government Imposes Sanctions on Syrian Mobile Operator
The U.S. Department of the Treasury has blacklisted syriatel, Syria's largest mobile phone operator, and Ramak, a chain of Syrian duty free stores after it named Rami Makhluf as an investor in both companies. Makhluf has been subject to US sanctions since early last year under a policy of targeting people the US government accuses of benefiting from, the public corruption of senior officials of the Syrian regime. more

The Syrian Telecommunication Establishment (STE) says that it expects revenues of SYP62.5 billion (US$1.25 billion) during 2008 - a rise of nearly 13% from 2007, thanks mainly due to revenues from the country's two mobile network operators. more

Zain Denies Reports of Syrian Aquisition
Kuwait's Zain (formerly MTC) has denied media reports that the company is in advanced talks to acquire a majority stake in the Syria based mobile network, syriatel. The Kuwait based Arabic language newspaper, Al-Qabas, citing unnamed sources said that the company was close to securing a 51% stake in the company. It gave no other details. more

Orascom settles Syrian dispute
Egypt's Orascom Telecom has settled its legal dispute with DREX Technologies, Orascom's partner in syriatel. The agreement reached on July 16th 2003 settles all legal disputes and litigation in International and Syrian jurisdictions. As part of the settlement, Orascom will no longer hold any shares in syriatel and will receive cash consideration to compensate for Orascom's initial investment, loans made to syriatel and expenses incurred. more
