Swiss Networks May Cooperate on LTE Network Upgrades

Swiss Network Upgrading Data Download Speeds to 28Mbps

­Swiss network operator, swisscom says that it is deploying a HSPA+ (HSPA Evolution) upgrade, with the first areas completed in time for the ITU Telecom World 2009 in Geneva. The upgrade will offer a peak rate data transfer rate of 28.8 Mbps - although the more realistic average is no higher than 8Mbps.  more

Swisscom Launching Availability Alerts Service

­Switzerland based operator, swisscom says that it is preparing to launch an "availability" SMS service. The new service, to be launched in October will send a free SMS to customers notifying them when a person they have been trying to call is available again.  more

Swisscom First Half Profits Up 20.7%

Switzerland's swisscom says that it closed the first half of 2009 with a 1.2% fall in net revenue to CHF 5.9 billion (US$5.45 billion) and operating income (EBITDA) down 3.8% to CHF 2.24 billion. On constant currency basis, net revenue rose by 0.3% while EBITDA declined by 2.7%.  more

Switzerland to Permit 3G at 900Mhz - Extends Licenses

Switzerland's telecoms regulator, ComCom has renewed the GSM mobile telephony licences of Orange, Sunrise and swisscom until the end of 2013. All the countries GSM licences, which were provisionally extended in April 2008, will now all expire at the same time (swisscom, Sunrise, Orange and In&Phone). This gives ComCom an opportunity to implement a comprehensive reallocation of all the mobile telephony frequencies which are free today or which will become free in 2013 or 2016.  more

Visa payWave mobile pilot in Switzerland declared a success

Credit Suisse, PostFinance, SIX Multipay, Swisscard, swisscom, together with Visa Europe have concluded a pilot study in Switzerland of contactless payments using Near Field Communication (NFC) enabled mobile phones incorporating Visa payWave card payment technology. In the pilot over 90% of people who took part liked using the technology for its ease and convenience. The same percentage also said they would use the technology when it becomes commercially available.  more

UK Wi-Fi Provider Halves Monthly Subscription Rates

BT, the UKs dominant landline operator has cut public Wi-Fi rates by up to 50 percent as it launched a new price structure. More than 2,500 extra European hotspots are also being added, bringing the choice of places to connect to more than 50,000 overseas, and over 100,000 UK and Ireland locations.  more

Swisscom 1st Half Net Income at CHF840 Million

ZURICH -(Dow Jones)- swisscom AG Wednesday said that thanks largely to the acquisition of the Italian company Fastweb in spring 2007, swisscom posted a 17.6% increase in revenue to CHF 5,991 million and an 18.9% increase in operating income (EBITDA) to CHF 2,427 million for the first half of 2008.  more

Swisscom Expands Mobile Advertising on Vodafone Live Portal

Mobile advertising agency, Ad Infuse has announced an expansion of its relationship with Switzerland's swisscom to deploy its adInMotion platform within the Vodafone live! portal. The deployment of adInMotion builds on the video advertising pilot that the two companies undertook in 2007 to encompass a broader solution including WAP and SMS advertising.  more
