One Step Closer to Superconducting Semiconductor Chips

Most chemical elements become superconducting at low temperatures or high pressures, but until now, copper, silver, gold, and the semiconductor germanium, for example, have all refused superconductivity. Scientists at the Forschungszentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (FZD) research center say that they are now able to produce superconducting germanium for the first time. Furthermore, they could unravel a few of the mysteries which come along with superconducting semiconductors.  more

Superconducting base stations help to cut dropped calls

Wireless operators can achieve dramatic increases in network performance by adding high-temperature superconducting products to their networks, according to data gathered by superconductor Technologies ("STI") during recent field trials for a major wireless carrier. STI says that a field trial of its SuperLink Rx cryogenic receiver front-end with a major wireless carrier showed a 43% reduction in dropped calls and a 26% decrease in blocked calls. more

ISCO confirms patent lawsuit to start next January

ISCO International has announced developments in its patent infringement suit against superconductor Technologies ("STI") and Conductus. ISCO announced on April 2, 2002, that it was seeking to add to the existing patent suit new claims involving alleged infringement by STI and Conductus of U.S. Patents 6,104,934 and 6,205,340. These patents, which were issued to ISCO on August 15, 2000 and March 20, 2001, respectively, cover the use of a cryogenic receiver front end ("CRFE") in a tower-mounted configuration. On April 17, the Federal District Judge overseeing the suit determined that the new claims could not be added without jeopardizing its January 13, 2003 trial date. Accordingly, the Judge ruled that the new claims must be asserted in a separate action. more
