Mobile industry seeks its own web domain name
Leading companies from the mobile industry have signed a memorandum of understanding to apply for a mobile Top Level Domain ("mobile TLD") from the Internet Corp. for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) during the current application round, which closes March 15. If the application is successful and the mobile TLD is granted by ICANN, the industry leaders have agreed to form a new joint venture to manage the mobile TLD. A mobile TLD would be a key step in bridging the world of mobility and the Internet to the benefit of customers and the entire mobile industry. more

New boss selected for Motorola
Motorola has elected the former boss of Sun, Edward J. Zander to succeed Christopher B. Galvin as chairman and chief executive officer of the company. Zander, 56, most recently was a managing director of Silver Lake Partners, a leading private equity fund focused on investments in technology industries. Zander will join Motorola in his new capacity effective 5 January 2004. more

New forum to push Java handset development
The OSGi Alliance has announced the formation of the Mobile Expert Group, a new working body designed to further promote the use of Java technology in the mobile space. Comprised of industry leaders including BMW, Gatespace Telematics, IBM, Motorola, Nokia, Oracle, Panasonic, ProSyst, Siemens VDO Automotive, Sun Microsystems, Telcordia Technologies and others, the Mobile Expert Group is chartered with defining requirements and specifications for the next generation of Java technology-based platform software, targeting data-capable mobile devices. more

Orange has announced that Sanjiv Ahuja has been appointed Chief Operating Officer of the Orange Group. Mr. Ahuja most recently had been chief executive officer of Comstellar Technologies, a California company focused on bringing innovative communications technologies to market. He also served as President of Telcordia Technologies (formerly Bellcore), the world's largest provider of operations support systems, network software and consulting and engineering services to the telecommunications industry. National Hockey League launches a Java Game
Tira Wireless has launched what it says is the first North American major sports league branded Java Game, the National Hockey League (NHL) PowerShot Hockey. The game carries the NHL brand as part of a licensing agreement signed between Tira Wireless and the NHL. NHL PowerShot Hockey will be made available to mobile subscribers through mobile operators in North America and across Europe. more
Thai network orders Java download server
Mobilitec and Sun Microsystems have said that Thailand's DTAC has chosen to commercially deploy their joint solution as the foundation for its new Java and wireless content download services. Mobilitec mPower on Sun Fire server, Solaris and Sun ONE Application Server platform is enabling the introduction of a new platform for downloading of multiple content types including Java applications, ring tones, pictures and melodies to the Thai market. more
