Batteries Need Charging More Often to Cope with Smartphone Power Demands
Studying the battery budget in cellphones, Strategy Analytics' latest report reveals that improvements in component power consumption and battery chemistry will not be sufficient to offset the growth in feature penetration and application usage. This report predicts that web browsing, navigation and social networking will see the biggest increase, growing from a combined 9% of the battery budget in 2008 to 30% by 2014. more

3G Base Station Amplifiers That Can Reduce Waste Heat Nearly 50%
TriQuint tested the first of its new HV-HBT amplifiers in a design commonly used by base station amplifier manufacturers that pairs devices in a 'Doherty' configuration. Used in this manner, the devices delivered an efficiency level of 57%, surpassing the efficiencies available using either conventional laterally-diffused metal oxide semiconductor (LDMOS) transistors or more expensive gallium nitride (GaN) devices. more
