Mobile Revenue Growth Slows to 3 Percent in Q1 2009

Mobile service revenues grew by just 3 percent in Q1 2009, down from 8 percent a year earlier, according to a report from the Strategy Analytics Wireless Network Strategies service. Nearly 40 percent of all mobile operators saw revenues fall in Q1 2009, compared to just 16 percent in the same situation in Q1 2008.  more

Ultra Low-Cost Handset Surge in China & India Sales to Reach 300 Million by 2013

Ultra low-cost handsets (ULCH) – those selling for $35 or less - will determine the success of operators and vendors in emerging markets, according to a report from the Strategy Analytics Emerging Markets Communications Strategies service. More than half of the 300 million ULCH expected to be sold in 2013 will go to emerging markets, with China and India playing a crucial role in driving the growth.  more

Global Handset Shipments Fall at Fastest Rate in History during Q1 2009

According to the latest research from Strategy Analytics, global mobile handset shipments fell a huge 13 percent year-over-year, to reach 245 million units in Q1 2009. De-stocking by cautious retailers and a worldwide economic downturn caused handset shipments to fall at their fastest rate in the industry's 27-year history.  more

Smartphone Deployments Accelerate in USA

Strategy Analytics says that RIM's BlackBerry dominates smartphone market share - at 37% - among all sizes of US businesses, while Microsoft's Windows Mobile platform comes in second - at 26%. Among the companies surveyed, Verizon Wireless and AT&T dominated business subscriptions, with AT&T slightly ahead in large enterprises (1000+), while Verizon showed greater penetration among small companies (under 100). Employees of large enterprises were also the most loyal BlackBerry users.  more

LTE Deployments will Cluster in 2600 Frequency Band

Strategy Analytics is predicting that the majority of LTE deployments by wireless operators will use the 2,600 MHz band, creating ample new opportunities for terminal component vendors. A strong tranche of deployments will also occur at sub-1,000 MHz frequencies, including roll-outs by such prominent operators as Verizon in the US, eventually accounting for one-third of deployments globally.  more

Batteries Need Charging More Often to Cope with Smartphone Power Demands

Studying the battery budget in cellphones, Strategy Analytics' latest report reveals that improvements in component power consumption and battery chemistry will not be sufficient to offset the growth in feature penetration and application usage. This report predicts that web browsing, navigation and social networking will see the biggest increase, growing from a combined 9% of the battery budget in 2008 to 30% by 2014.  more
