AT&T Sees Surge in Wi-Fi Connections

AT&T has reported dramatic growth in the number of Wi-Fi users and connections. The US firm reported Wi-Fi connections totaled 10.5 million in the first quarter of 2009 - more than triple the 3.4 million connections in the first quarter of 2008, and more than half AT&T's 20 million total Wi-Fi connections for all of 2008.  more

Starbucks Switching Wi-Fi Providers in UK and Ireland

starbucks is to switch its in-store Wi-Fi service from T-Mobile to British Telecom, covering more than 650 starbucks coffeehouses in the UK and Ireland. The first stores will have the service installed this week and the roll out will be completed by the end of the summer 2009.  more

AT&T iPhone Customers to Receive Free Wi-Fi Access

US operator, AT&T Wireless has announced it will begin offering free AT&T Wi-Fi service to current and new iPhone 3G and iPhone customers. AT&T claims to have the nation's largest Wi-Fi network, with more than 17,000 hot spots including starbucks, Barnes & Noble, and thousands of other locations.  more

Wi-Fi Hotspots Stay Hot in 2008

Wi-Fi hotspots are continuing their torrid growth in 2008. According to ABI ResearchÃ's WI-FI Hotspots Forecasts, by the end of this year global hotspots will grow by 40% over 2007. The greatest growth and the largest number of hotspots continue to be found in Europe. While the UK has long led in European Wi-Fi hotspots, there is also marked growth in France, Germany, and Russia.  more

T-Mobile Appoints New Chief Marketing Officer

Fresh from trying to sue starbucks over the migration of its Wi-Fi service to AT&T, it seems that T-Mobile USA has now taken to poaching the coffee-chain's staff instead. It has been announced that Denny Marie Post, the senior VP-global food and beverage at starbucks is to move to T-Mobile as the mobile operator's chief marketing officer (CMO).  more

T-Mobile USA Sues Starbucks Over Free Wi-Fi Service

T-Mobile USA has launched a lawsuit against the coffee chain, starbucks alleging that company has not held to an agreement over their Wi-Fi service. T-Mobile has provided a chargeable Wi-Fi service to the US branches of starbucks for the past seven years, but it was recently announced that the contract would terminate at the end of this year and be replaced by a service from AT&T.  more

AT&T Starts Starbucks Wi-Fi Rollout

AT&T and starbucks USA have begun of the rollout of AT&T's Wi-Fi service at company-operated starbucks stores, kicking off a nationwide effort that will continue through 2008. Also, as of May 1, qualifying AT&T high speed Internet and Wi-Fi customers will have complimentary Wi-Fi access at more than 7,000 starbucks locations nationwide.  more

Sales of Wi-Fi phones up 60%, wireless LAN equipment up 20% in 2007

Worldwide sales of wireless LAN equipment, including independent and dependent access points and WLAN switches and controllers, hit $1.9 billion in 2007, up 20% from 2006, driven by the increased rollout of enterprise wireless LANs and accelerating upgrading to 802.11n, according to Infonetics Research's latest quarterly report.  more

T-Mobile UK has announced a tariff change which offers a combined 3G and Wi-Fi service to its customers. The new service enables free Wi-Fi access when combined with one of the company's mobile data tariffs.  more
