Yota reaches operational breakeven point

Russian WiMAX network operator Passes Subscriber Landmark

Russian WiMAX network operator, Yota says that it has signed up its 100,000th active subscriber. The network has added 60,000 subscribers since its commercial launch in June in the cities of Moscow and Saint Petersburg. The company already had 40,000 pre-launch trial customers.  more

Russia & Central Asia Q2 08 - 3G ConnectionsTop Half a Million

The number of W-CDMA 3G connections in the Russia and Central Asia region surpassed half a million in the second quarter of 2008, as Russian market leader MTS joined the fray. Rival MegaFon was the first Russian operator to get next generation services underway at the end of October last year, with MTS entering the market at the end of May and Vimpelcom rolling out its first offerings just a couple of weeks ago.  more

Russian Theatre Jams Mobile Phones

Russia's oldest national theatre, the Alexandrinksy has installed hardware to block mobile phones from working during performances. The St Petersburg based theatre, which famously booed the first night of Chekhov's The Seagull has been plagued by members of the audience ignoring requests to turn off their phones during performances. more

Russia Passes 100 Million Subscriber Mark

Russia's subscriber mark passed the 100 million mark last month, after a total of 4.8 million new subscribers were added in July. In addition, cellular development did not slow down in July - net additions were 500,000 more than in June, which is in line with the trend for the last few years. Vimpelcom and MTS clearly managed to rev-up sales and off-set the potential negative effect of seemingly inevitable higher churn (repercussions of the aggressive give-away campaign in December 2004 and early 2005). Apart from organic growth Vimpelcom also consolidated 100 thousand subscribers of ST Mobile (Sakhalin). more

Tele2 launches fifth Russian GSM network

Tele2 has announced that it has launched a GSM-network in Omsk, its fifth in Russia under the Tele2 brand. The population covered by the GSM-license in Omsk is two million and the region's mobile penetration is approximately 13%. Tele2 is the third mobile operator to launch GSM-services in the region. more

GSM network launched in St Petersburg

Tele2 has launched a GSM1800 network in Russia's St Petersburg, under the Tele2 brand. The population covered by the GSM-license in St Petersburg is 5 million and the region's mobile penetration is approximately 35%. Tele2 is the fourth mobile operator to launch GSM-services in the region. St Petersburg is the second largest city in Russia and is an important commercial and cultural center. As in Irkutsk and Rostov, the GSM-network in St Petersburg was launched based on the GSM1800 standard, having similar coverage per base station as the GSM900 standard by using a phased array antenna solution from Radio Components. more

Tele2 opens its first Russian GSM network

Sweden's Tele2 has launched its first Russian GSM-network in Irkutsk under the Tele2 brand. This launch initiates the rollout of Tele2's GSM-networks in Russia, and the objective is to convert a further four networks by the end of 2003. more
