Cisco Joins WiMAX Forum Board of Directors

The WiMAX Forum has announced the addition of Cisco as a new member of its board of directors. Sai Subramanian, director of marketing for the broadband wireless business unit of Cisco, will serve as Cisco’s representative on the WiMAX Forum board. Last week, the WiMAX Forum also announced that it had added Tata Communications’ COO Prateek Pashine to its board.  more

Sprint Outlines WiMAX Expansion Programme

USA network, sprint Nextel has announced the next markets in its WiMAX network rollout. The network is being folded into the national WiMAX network being built by its joint-partner, Clearwire. sprint says that it plans to deploy WiMAX in many markets in 2009, including: Atlanta, Honolulu, Charlotte, Las Vegas, Chicago, Philadelphia, DallasFort Worth, Portland and Seattle  more

Sprint Offers Integration with Cisco Unified Communications Manager

US mobile operator, sprint has announced the launch of a corporate fixed-mobile platform based on the Cisco Unified Communications Manager. sprint Wireless Integration is delivered using the sprint IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) architecture, built into sprintÃ's IP/MPLS network, which not only minimizes equipment required on the customer premises but also allows for intelligent routing and "on-net" calling capabilities nationwide.  more

BART Riders Embrace Paying with Mobile Phones – NFC Trial a Success

Earlier this year a select group of San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART) riders took part in a first-in-the-nation trial to pay for their fares and food, receive discounts and check account balances using just their new mobile phone containing a contactless chip that enables transactions without a traditional plastic card. BART, First Data and ViVOtech has published the results of the trial conducted in the San Francisco area from Jan. 28 to May 30, 2008, which demonstrate high use when both transit fare and retail payments are combined in the same phone.  more

EARNINGS PREVIEW: US Telecoms Expect Strong Wireless Qtr

TAKING THE PULSE: The wireless business continues to hum for the U.S. telecommunications companies, but signs of competitive pressure are beginning to creep in. Wireless continues to be driven by smartphone sales and the adoption of pricier service plans, offsetting the deteriorating wireline business. AT&T remains at the forefront but eventually will lose its leadership position in wireless once Verizon Communications completes its acquisition of Alltel. Smaller companies, meanwhile, are scrambling to catch up, with prepaid wireless reseller Virgin Mobile USA acquiring niche player Helio. The landline business, meanwhile, continues to deteriorate as a result of economic pressures and alternative lines of communications.  more
