Hike in telecom capex expected in 2H09, though overall capex still down in 2009
Market research firm Infonetics Research has reported that global service provider capex (capital expenditures) hit a plateau at $298 billion in 2008, marking the end of a five-year investment cycle. This represented a 12.9% increase in capex spending from the previous year, with much of the growth due to currency appreciation against the US dollar, which peaked in July 2008. more

More Job Cuts at Sprint Nextel Expected Next Year
US operator, sprint Nextel is expected to announce a large round of job cuts in the new year as the company tries to turn itself around. Pali Research analyst Walter Piecyk wrote on his blog that the company would post a charge to its finances in Q1 to cover the cost of the redundancies, but will boost the long term profitability of the firm. more

Virgin Mobile USA and UK Q2 2008 Results
The Virgin GroupÃ's two largest mobile businesses reported their second quarter results this week, which showed a drop in customer numbers on both sides of the pond. In the United Kingdom, Virgin Mobile lost 3.0% of its customer base in the quarter - equivalent to 134k connections - reducing its total from 4.42m to 4.29m. Meanwhile in the USA, its namesake lost 111k connections, which saw the base drop back through the 5m mark to end June at 4.99m - 2.2% down quarter on quarter. more

WiMAX Adoption in the USA Still Faces Many Hurdles
According to a new report from Maravedis, both licensed and unlicensed Wireless Internet Service Providers (WISPs) benefit the most from the short term opportunities with BWA/WiMAX. This will not generate massive adoption but will contribute to building credibility of the WiMAX business case. For WISPs, a fixed and/or portable application with strong service models, integrated back-office technologies, and value-added services is a powerful enough proposition to go to market. The "tipping point" for greater WiMAX adoption will likely be in 2009-2010. more
