Ericsson Rumoured to have Won $2 Billion Deal from Sprint Nextel
Ericsson is reported to have won a huge US$2 billion service contract from US operator, sprint Nextel. Citing sources, the business news magazine, Affarsvarlden said the contract is said to be a surprise considering that Ericsson no long supports the CDMA technology used by sprint Nextel. The complex integration with the Motorola supplied iDEN network can only add to the headaches, although any deal could lead to speculation that Motorola might try to offload their entire iDEN platform to Ericsson. more

US Operator Subscriber Growth is "Optimistic"
A research note from Bernstein Research analyst Craig Moffett has warned that the US operators are being optimistic about their subscriber growth forecasts. He warned that the operators are all anticipating subscriber growth of around 4.6% for 2009, which is lower than the 5.9% achieved in 2008, but is still unlikely to be achieved. more

Despite Recession - US Smartphone Market Still Growing
According to The NPD Group, consumer sales of smartphones to U.S. consumers represented 23 percent of all handset sales in the fourth quarter (Q4) 2008 compared to just 12 percent in Q4 2007. Led by the release of Apple's iPhone 3G at $199, the average price for a smartphone fell 23 percent from $216 in Q4 2007 to $167 last year. more

Fitch Downgrades Sprint Nextel's IDR to 'BB'; Outlook Negative
Debt ratings agency, Fitch has downgraded sprint Nextel's Issuer Default Rating (IDR) to 'BB' with a negative outlook. Fitch says that sprint Nextel's downgrade is reflective of the significant continued revenue declines primarily due to the high subscriber losses as well as the limited visibility over the timing and the extent of how overall operating trends might improve during 2009. In particular, the iDEN operations have continued a sharp deterioration of its operating metrics. more

Sprint Nextel Reports Loss of 1.3 Million Customers in Q4 '08
sprint Nextel has reported a fourth-quarter loss of US$1.62 billion, compared to the extraordinary loss of US$29.3 billion a year ago, caused by the US$29 billion write down of its Nextel purchase. Revenue in the quarter also fell 14.4 percent to $8.4 billion as 1.3 million subscribers decided to leave the company. more
