ZTE Aims to be a Top-5 Phone Manufacturer This Year
China's ZTE is close to breaking into the top-5 of global handset manufacturers after it saw handset shipments jump by 40% in 2008 to reach 45 million units, according to the Taiwan based DigiTimes publication. The company had set itself a target of gaining a top-5 placement by 2011, but did accept that shrinking market share in competitors could bring that date forward. more

Sony Ericsson Enters the South Korean Market
Sony Ericsson is to enter the South Korean market for the first time - as it prepares to offer its Windows Mobile based Xperia X1 smartphone on SK Telecom's mobile network. Although the government has dropped the requirement that all handsets sold in the country use the proprietary WIPI platform - Sony Ericsson has chosen to retain that for its first product launch. more

Western European Mobile Phone Market now in Recession
Three consecutive quarters of negative growth have led the Western European mobile phone market into recession. According to IDC's European Mobile Phone Tracker, vendors shipped 53.6 million units in 4Q08, 13.5% lower than the 62 million units shipped in 4Q07. For the full year 2008, vendors shipped 190.5 million units in Western Europe, 5.9% lower than the 202.5 million units shipped in 2007. more

A report from Chinese research firm, CCID Consulting shows that the sales volume of smart phones in China's market in the first half of 2008 reached 15.671 million sets, up 32.1% over H1 2007, and the sales revenue reached 37.74 billion Yuan, up 25.7% over H1 2007. more
