Sony Ericsson Records Second Consecutive Quarterly Profit

Sony Ericsson has continued its return to profit after recording a net profit of EUR12 million (US$15.4 million) for­ the second quarter of 2010. This compared to a loss of EUR213 million a year ago and a larger net profit of EUR21 million in the first quarter of this year.  more

Shipments of Cell Phones Return to Growth in Q2

Global shipments of cell phones in the second quarter climbed 4.7 percent compared to the first, marking the first sequential increase for the market since the third quarter of 2008, according to iSuppli Corp. Worldwide shipments amounted to 265 million units in the second quarter, up from 253 million in the first.  more

Motorola Q1 Sales Beat Expectations - But Losses Worse

Motorola has reported sales of US$5.4 billion in the first quarter of 2009, down on the US$7.5 billion a year ago - but above most analyst expectations of around US$5.6 billion. The net loss was US$231 million, higher than the US$194 million a year ago, although that was better than analysts expected.  more

ZTE Aims to be a Top-5 Phone Manufacturer This Year

China's ZTE is close to breaking into the top-5 of global handset manufacturers after it saw handset shipments jump by 40% in 2008 to reach 45 million units, according to the Taiwan based DigiTimes publication. The company had set itself a target of gaining a top-5 placement by 2011, but did accept that shrinking market share in competitors could bring that date forward.  more

Industry to Settle on a Generic Phone Charger for All Mobile Phones

The GSMA and 17 mobile operators and manufacturers have announced that they are committed to implementing a cross-industry standard for a universal charger for new mobile phones. The aim of the initiative, led by the GSMA, is to ensure that the mobile industry adopts a common format for mobile phone charger connections and energy-efficient chargers resulting in an estimated 50 per cent reduction in standby energy consumption and the potential elimination of up to 51,000 tonnes of duplicate chargers.  more

Sony Ericsson Sales Drop 10% - Loss Shrinks

Sony Ericsson has reported a 10% drop in sales to ¢â€š¬2,808 million (US$3,777 million) compared to the third quarter of 2007, citing a shift in production to cheaper phones as well as exchange rate fluctuations. The company posted a net loss of ¢â€š¬25 million (US$33.6 million) - lower than the average of ¢â€š¬74 million loss which had been expected by analysts.  more

T-Mobile Planning "Google Phone" Launch at End of Sept - report
