Worldwide Mobile Phone Shipments Down by 15.8% in First Quarter
The worldwide mobile phone market began 2009 with an expected sequential downturn, exacerbated by the challenges of the ongoing worldwide recession. According to IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, vendors shipped a total of 244.8 million units in the first quarter of 2009 (1Q09), approximately 15.8% lower than the 290.8 million units shipped during 1Q08. The first quarter of a new year is typically characterized by seasonally lower shipment volumes following a busy holiday quarter with channels clearing out excess inventory. But the 1Q09 decline was especially sharp due to weak end-user demand, currency volatility, and lack of credit for merchants as consumers and the supply chain adapt to the recession. more

Sony Ericsson names Replacement Boss for North America Markets
Sony Ericsson has announced that Anderson Teixeira, currently Head of Region Western Europe is to take over as President of Sony Ericsson US and Head of Region North America. Kristian Tear will succeed Teixeira as Head of Region Western Europe and will combine this new role with his current responsibilities as Head of Sony Ericsson's Global Customer Operations. more

ZTE Aims to be a Top-5 Phone Manufacturer This Year
China's ZTE is close to breaking into the top-5 of global handset manufacturers after it saw handset shipments jump by 40% in 2008 to reach 45 million units, according to the Taiwan based DigiTimes publication. The company had set itself a target of gaining a top-5 placement by 2011, but did accept that shrinking market share in competitors could bring that date forward. more

iPhone: Not a top 20 handset for browsing and buying on the mobile web
According to statistics released by mobile billing and analytics firm, Bango, when it comes to the most popular phones for browsing and buying content on the mobile web worldwide, the iPhone still sits outside the top 20. The Bango Top 20 handset list, based on Bango's February statistics, puts the Nokia 3110c on top, followed by the Samsung M800 in 2nd and the Nokia 6300 in 3rd. more

Opera Reports Over 20 Million Users of its Java Mini Browser
Norwegian web browser developer, Opera says that its Mini mobile browser userbase has reached 20.5 million, representing 160% growth since February 2008. Opera Mini users viewed 7.3 billion pages, a 290% increase over February 2008. Opera Mini servers processed more than 1.2 petabytes of data in February, generating more than 124 million MB of data traffic for mobile operators worldwide. Since February 2008, data transfers have grown 338%. more
