Open Source OS Assists Chinese Development of the Smart Phone Market
A report from Chinese research firm, CCID Consulting shows that the sales volume of smart phones in China's market in the first half of 2008 reached 15.671 million sets, up 32.1% over H1 2007, and the sales revenue reached 37.74 billion Yuan, up 25.7% over H1 2007. more

Nokia, Tuesday said it will acquire the remaining stake in Symbian it doesn't already own and with a range of partners create the Symbian Foundation, an open source model for the Symbian wireless operating system. more

Symbian Components to be Offered as Open Source Software
Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Motorola and NTT DoCoMo announced today their intent to unite Symbian OS, S60, UIQ and MOAP(S) to create one open mobile software platform. Together with AT&T, LG Electronics, Samsung Electronics, STMicroelectronics, Texas Instruments and Vodafone they plan to establish the Symbian Foundation to extend the appeal of this unified software platform. more

Sony Ericsson 1Q Net Profit Slumps 48%
LONDON (Dow Jones) - Sony Ericsson, the world's No.4 maker of mobile phones, on Wednesday posted a 48% drop in first-quarter profit, as slower sales, higher research and development costs and a component shortage took a toll on the bottom line. more
