Sonera Sold Deutsche Telekom Shares for US$515 Million

In compliance with the terms of its agreement with Deutsche Telekom, the company has exercised its right to release sonera from the lock-up of over 40% of the total number of Deutsche Telekom shares owned by sonera. Accordingly, sonera and Deutsche Telekom agreed on a programme of sales to be executed starting July 9, subject to market conditions. This programme resulted in a sale of approximately 21.9 million Deutsche Telekom shares through a series of small market transactions. The total proceeds from the share sales amount to approximately US$515 million and sonera will record a gain of about US$18 million from the sales for the third quarter of 2001. The share sales were executed by Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein. "After the sale announced today of approximately 21.9 million Deutsche Telekom shares, sonera has now covered the repayment of its existing short-term UMTS loan portion, all due on October 25, 2001", sonera's CFO Kim Ignatius says. The shares sold were part of the lot of approximately 72 million shares sonera received from Deutsche Telekom in May 2001 as consideration for the shares of GSM operators VoiceStream Wireless and Powertel that sonera agreed to sell to Deutsche Telekom in summer 2000.
